Your chairs around the table go to the floor, giving a lot of visual weight to that area. The hanging light adds even more. I can see a tall piece with storage on one wall and a large piece of art, preferably vertical, on the other. I like the West Elm storage piece below for it's exposed legs and good looks. I'd put an art light on the painting and a torchiere nearby.

Erotica Interiors Inc., how would you tie the two living together with white? Because the walls are white itself. i tried it by adding a white pot with flower on the table but it does not tie alot.

How about a buffet, or sideboard, with a china cabinet on the other wall?

Hi there, it's not that all of the art needs to be white - more that you have white content to the art so that it flows through and have it framed in black so that it balances the weight of the furniture, the dark pieces on living room wall and co-ordinates with the light fixture. I would put a large piece of art on one wall and maybe two on the other it will keep space feeling open yet intimate (oh and perhaps one for the living room end wall (or a three dimensional piece or a texture - like a hanging carpet) - does that help?

To tie the two areas together you can take the blue from the dining chairs over to the sofa area in the form of pillows, rug, or artwork. In the dining area, use black and white art.

Hi raphaelo. On the other wall a beautiful large clock centered on the wall. On either side of the clock I would find a tall column like plant real or faux/or branches anchored in an oversize planter type pot - pot could be your punch of color on this side. Perhaps orange or yellow.

Given the clean lines of your furnishings, you may want to consider sliding shoji screens in front of your shelves, bookcases, dish storage, etc. They create a very tranquil uncluttered feeling perfect for dining yet very functional in this space. They are a wonderful backdrop for potted plants and sculpture's. Depending on the material you choose, they can also be back lit for a soft glow further defining the dining area as well as visually expanding its size.

Floating buffet... maybe an accent color...

Considering that every other surface in your home is white or beige, you definitely need color in that area. How about a yellow/gold color? Or better yet leave it white and add a large colorful art piece like momof5x suggested.

Paint walls pewter gray. Add large 40 x40" or bigger contemporary art to both walls. Add window panels in a woven gray fabric to ends only extend rod pass window 6" floor to ceiling.

Love table and chairs good job light great too.

Love yr home. In living room add a bigger lower dramatic chandelier where smaller one is now. Add bigger plants inside green house window a lot of them fill up space. If you don't want to paint still add bold art in dining area. Play off the blue hairs.

Vertical artwork will help visually lift the living room ceiling. Most everything in there is horizontal...furniture, TV, fireplace.

What size and shape of rug would you advise?
We have a difficult shape living area.
Would it be to mutch when the colour of the wall art and the rug are blue like the dining chairs?

Rectangular or square would work well. A blue rug would be fine and then artwork with a little blue in it.

How about a big piece of artwork - i.e. 40x50" - to add some color and a sense of space. Put shelves or a cabinet in at an angle or get them that are specifically made for corners. A light may work but that could look like you ran out of options and just put a light there

The two walls navy blue metallic paint. LARGE square mirror on one wall, tall narrow-shelved wide metallic bookcase on other. OR, low buffet on one wall with matching "cupboard" hung high and a piece of large art on other. The buffet with high cupboard can be used to serve, or to high light sculptural pieces. Lighting under the cupboard would add another layer of design. AREA RUG to tie it all together....even an indoor outdoor sisal look.

Do not make everything rug, art. In blue. Art should be bold and many colors. I like the shag rugs in silver metallics would work for you. Take chances. Look at rooms you like. What is it that you like? I think rooms are more interesting, if you mix up the looks. In a contemporary room keep it low sleek, clean lines. No clutter remember less is sometimes more. Area rugs are to define your area, that is all. It's no meant to cover the whole area. In large size rm usually a 8 x 10 will work.

For the living we are thinking about a round rug not very bigger then the table it self. Beacuase a square rug is difficult in a triangular shape living setup.

Can you back up your sofa so that a 6 x 9' rug will fit? I don't like round rugs and don't think there is much purpose in having a rug that is only under a coffee table. Part of the rug should go under the sofa.

I'd love the cowhide idea of carolins if this family lived further north, but I think they live in Florida which seems to me to be too tropical for a cowhide. Maybe an irregularly shaped rug. I'll look for one

While I do think that a rectangular or square rug will work, you could also choose an irregularly shaped rug. I'm showing the ones below for shape, not color.

Can you please clarify, Raphaelo, if you live in Florida or another tropical area because if you don't, I love carolins cowhide idea and would choose one that.is spattered with metallic paint.

Yes we live in the Netherlands. Tomorrow it's 35 degrees ( celcius) but winters are long and can be cold. We just like the mix of a southern europeean style (and Florida too) and modern style to compromise this climat.

To anwser your question. We can' t move the couch more to the back because of a door.

Ah yes, rahaelo, I remember drawing that plan for you. I think that a 9 x 12'rug, running NOT the direction of the furniture, but the direction of the walls, will work for you. Don't plan on getting those 2 extra chairs that are in the upper left part of the drawing, on the rug. In fact, not all the legs will fit on the rug, but just don't worry about it.

Each of those big squares in my drawing is 4' square, so your rug will cover a space two and a quarter big squares from left to right and 3 squares from top to bottom. You should be able to get most of the furniture with legs on the rug, but not all.

Using a 9 x 12' rug, the corner of the rug should stick out from the sofa behind the middle of it just a bit. The two front legs will be on the rug.

Either corner bookshelves or corner unit. Or some floating shelves to display art. Add large art on either side and a tall standing mirror on the other side, unless you are tied to symmetry. Definitely put an area rug under the couch to define that area.

This dilemma, a fun one, is from 2013 and I'm hoping that they are enjoying their finished room by now!
