48" will be tight I suggest trying to seat side by side in a 4 foot space to see what it feels like so you can see how tight that is.

48 inches would be fine. Each having one free elbow to fly without bumping someone, makes this work just fine. I have a 6 feet bar length, and seat 3 full size adults there. Mine is rectangular at a right angle to the end of my counter, so I can sit one adult on each of the 3 feet wide ends, 3 adults on the 6' length, and one adult on the inside 3 feet, that adjoins the counter at a right angle. If we are just snacking and visiting, we have added 2 or 3 more around the bar 'on the corners' with chairs...and sat for a full afternoon! That being said, if you have lots of friends or company at meal time, is the main reason in our 'empty nest stage'....we wish our counter height bar, was table height. Bar stools that are comfortable are hard to come by, and tucking the heels under the seat is not as much fun as it used to be! A nice Mission or Amish style chair with a shaped wood seat and full back rest --or a chair cushion, is a whole lot more comfortable than most bar stools, and a great investment too for versatile sitting in the hearth room, den, around a game table, or at the kitchen 'bar'..
