Help with area rug selection, please!

Hello,
I am in the process of redecorating our family room and the overall look that I am going for is a cozy library reading room. I am having built ins installed and I would like to paint the walls a dark color, similar to the inspiration photo below.

I am starting with the rug as a launching place for wall color and have two that I am deciding between. The problem is that I am only able to see a sample in person and I am struggling with which one to go with.

The photos attached show the room in it's current state. The sofa is being reupholstered in the solid fabric that you see next to the cheetah print (that will be used for pillows) & I would like a hide on hair rug spilling out from underneath it.

The area rug will be placed in front of the fireplace with the Carmel leather chairs on it. The burgandy leather chair will not be staying and I may purchase two more of the Carmel chairs to do a sitting area in front of the fireplace.

The built ins will be to the right of the fireplace & I would also like to panel the top portion of the fireplace to get rid of so much brick and get closer to my inspo picture.

What are your thoughts on either of these rugs? I LOVE the blue one but fear that my wall choices will be limited. Can I do dark walls with a dark rug? The medalion one is beautiful as well, but is there too much terra cotta & turquoise? The pics with the larger rugs are from an app that shows the item in my room - not the actual rug.

Thank you for any/all ideas!!!

I would recommend you continue to search for a rug more like the one in the original photo.

I love traditional rugs with these beautiful colours! I think either would be great the second one is lighter and would be better in a darker room. Just add that blue in the edge as an accent colour with throw pillows or paint an wall in that light blue colour.

I like that rug! Do you have the name and manufacture? Thank you!

    Beverly,
Thank you so much! I just got home and was able to see the other rugs (they wouldn't download on my phone earlier). Can you send me links for them? I like a few of them very much.

    Hi m1971-

If you look at your photo of the library with the blue bookcases, the rug has a light field, and the coffee table and chairs or sectional are equally light in color.

If you are going to have your walls and book shelves dark blue as well, rug #2 (the mostly blue one) is too dark and too blue. Rug #1 (the mostly red one) is probably too intense a color as well with four strongly colored chairs.

I am confused with the two different rugs.

What do you mean you want a "hide on hair rug" under the sofa, and the other oriental rug, (the alternatives for which you have shown us here,) in front of the sofa?

Do you want something like a zebra skin hide in front of the sofa and just a little 2' x 3' oriental rug' in front of the fireplace?

You do want your rug to be the right size for your space. Can you give us an idea of the proportions?

Before you make a final decision, please do a mock-up on Photoshop with all your walls and bookshelves your desired color, your rug, your chairs, and your sofa in their respective positions.

Thank you all so much for your replies! I am still stuck on the rug selection and am having such a hard time pulling the trigger on any of them. I eliminated the first two because I just didn't think they would work, and also because of their sizes. A 5x7 is too small and an 8x10 is too large. I would like to go with a 6x9 or a 7"7x9"9.

That being said, I have narrowed to four more - pictures are included in this post.

The first is an Ethan Allen Heriz & I can get it on sale only until TONIGHT!! Agh! Help!

The second is from Ballard Designs, and the others are Safavieh. Any opinions asap would be so much appreciated!!

    Last rug option.

I am still wanting to stick with the deeper paint color, which is why I like the Ballard one. The others all have a deep navy in them, which I really like.

To answer one of the questions that was asked, I would like a cow hide rug to peek out from under the sofa at the other end of the room. THANK YOU!!
