RS I also prefer the diamond tufted. Although a more traditional use of tufting, it will be womderful mixed with your modern sconces and in a modern room. I love those sconces! May I ask where are you got them? Should be a fantastic room, great choices.

Ho sochi, thank you for the advice! I like mixing styles as long as they work together. I think sometimes when everything is so modern, it looks too cold and uninteresting. I got the sconces in the outdoor section at Farrey's. I can't remember the manufacturer off hand, but if you want, I can go look.

It would help to see your actual room and what else you are planning for it.

Keeping anything tufted clean is a chore. Are you sure about this? Also, these oversize headboards are going to look very dated in a few years. They also totally dominate a room. If I'm going to have a bed dominate my room, it's going to be an antique 4-poster with full bed hangings, not a new bed.

Both choices of headboards just need to be vacuumed, I don't think it's that much maintenance. My ceilings are very high, so I love the look of a high headboard -- and at 68" it's actually not that high. They have headboards up to 92" -- now that's super high!

As far as what else is planned in the room -- nothing yet, I am first picking the bed and going from there. The room is completely empty except for the two sconces on the wall.

Patricia -- I totally agree. That is what's throwing me off -- I think the diamond tufted is more classic looking and less trendy, BUT the rectangle tufted is more modern and in keeping with the sconces. I just think that rectangular tufted may look a little "80's" ....

I prefer the diamond tufted (2nd picture gray headboard). For some reason I find the first one less appealing. While I'm no expert on what will or won't go out of style, the first one seems like it could look dated more quickly.

The second one would definitely be my choice. And I agree that it works with your high ceilings, but don't count on a headboard of that height not being dated in time. If you really love it though, who cares...

Gee I am torn because I love the sconces and feel the first bed works so well with them but I personally am more drawn to the diamond tufts but that could be because I am more accustom to traditional upholstered beds rather than it being a better choice. Have any other furniture pieces been chosen yet. That might help me decide which actually works best in your specific room.

I think the square tufting plus the sconces creates too strong a geometric shape that looks lifeless and cold. Too matchy matchy as well. The contrast of the sumptuous diamond shape tufting with the sconces would create a richness that is modern and warm.

I really like the second bed. Personally I don't find the proportions of the first bed pleasing. I like the sconces, but will they extend beyond the sidewalks of either bed? Will you be using them for reading or just for ambient light? But if you are reading on a back lit device it probably wouldn't matter and I think they would provide nice ambient light.

Mojomom, re: the sconces, I don't think they will really extend beyond the sidewalks, but they are only for ambient light. I am actually surprised I like the sidewalks because I thought it would make me feel trapped in, but they are very shallow and I feel like they frame the bed and maybe they'll hold the pillows on the bed better, lol.

I would use painter's tape (easy safe removal kind) to create the size of the headboard on your wall, to see the proportion of the headboard in the room. The sconces as well. The overall size of the pieces in the room may be the determining factor for a satisfying look.

I like second, but the sconces not. Too linear and modern -- unless other furniture really supports that look. Lamps would be so much better, like Bev showed, and so many options, changeable too.
