The distance from the countertop to the bottom of the hood will now be 24". The countertop stove will be electric.

The range hood should state in the instructions on the max height the hood should be from the range to vent properly.

Stand at the counter like you're cooking. Do you bump your head? Is it awkward? Have others who will cook do the same. That's where you'll find the answer that works for you.

Aside from code requirements, the primary consideration is whether it is an issue for you when you are standing there. A secondary consideration is whether it could be an issue for a prospective future buyer of your home who might be taller than you, or someone in your own household who is taller than you. I was once visiting at my sister's house and, while standing next to her while she was cooking, managed to smack my head into the corner of her stainless steel hood. It had never been an issue for her and her husband, but I'm about 4" taller and the hood was in the perfect place to draw blood.

One test is to stand in front of the cooktop cabinet and go through the motions of cooking. Is the hood in the way?

I'm not tall, but a 24" hood-to-counter height would be too low for me.

That's for short people to cook there.......the hood should be taller than the chef.......

The cooktop installation instructions will dictate the minimum distance from the countertop surface to the unprotected pieces of the hood (the wood). I'm guessing 30" so you might want to review that now vs at final inspection. Code is manufacturer's specs.

The COOKTOP determines the height of combustibles above. Wood is combustible. The usual specified distance is 30”-36” above the cooktop.

And all of that raw wood dhould have been finished off site, in a clean room, with a conversion varnish. Site finishing with bugs and dust is a hack method.

I will vote for too low. (BTW - this is probably better posted in the kitchen forum)

I also second Sophie's comment (although not as harsh), it is preferable to paint cabinets in a factory. She mentions varnish which I see you aren't doing but paint is still preferable somewhere else.

I doubt this is changeable, but so many short drawers near the cooking surface? I would prefer at least one taller one - for taller pots, colanders, dutch oven etc. The bottom looks a little taller and maybe with frameless, it will work. But the tall pots and dutch oven are heavy, so down low is not ideal. And then, they aren't really wide enough for large sauce pans (at least to my eye). I totally apologize for stating something that you can't change but it is meant for other readers.

Too low. I think the problem arose with how you specified the height of the hood. The specification should have been based on the distance between the cooktop and the bottom of the hood. That distance should be between 30" and 36". Given the proportion of the hood, probably closer to 30", but 24" is definitely too low.

Just checked mine, it’s about 35” from the cooktops to the hood, and 29” from the grill part of the stove to the hood.

I just measured mine and in doing so I think that the distance from the bottom of your cabinets to your counters will also be too low. What is that distance?

My hood bottom to counter top distance is 35". My house was built by very tall people. The distance will be around 34" when I remodel.

Cabinet base to counter top is just over 19".

Cabinet door bottom to counter top is 18".

Chispa, I am not following what you are measuring for the 19" and 18" you said. Here are standard measurements, which can of course be altered, but are what you'd start with as standard:

Kitchen floor to countertop surface = 36"

Countertop to bottom of upper cabinets = 18"

Cooktop to bottom of hood = between 30" and 36"

Base cabinets' depth back-to-front, not including counter overhang = 24"

Upper cabinets' depth back-to-front = 12"

Might be a smudge too low but I think once there is a countertop and a proper backsplash it might not be too bad. Also the height of the hood and the flanking cabinets are adding to its "heaviness". Are the doors two panel or one large single panel? A one-over-one panel door would break up the height of the cabinets and you could run a horizontal board along the top 1/3 of the hood to also break up the size of the hood.

When you are at the range top will you be taller than the hood bottom? If so, that's too low...

Two things- one what does code say- distance from hood to countertop? Two, see above- if you are taller than hood bottom, it's a problem.

I once had the opposite problem. Hood way too high-still to code, but too many tall people making decisions for a short woman. We brought it down so the I can actually reach the controls and within code. I also still have a beautiful view outside.

Get with your contractor- stat.

frieda, I described exactly the same thing that you wrote, but used different words! My 18 is equal to your 18. I assumed we were all talking about upper cabinets so I didn't add that to my wording.

The manufacturer of the hood I have ordered says 30"- 36" from the top of the cooking surface to the bottom of the hood. I would not go any lower than 30" and now wish I had gone 32-34"

It's a simple replacement of the one cabinet (hood) if it is too low. Looks like they lowered it to accommodate the trim or beams? It's going to be a gorgeous kitchen. Much too pretty to settle.

To people saying to judge what the installed height of the hood should be by your own height, that is incorrect. The hood's purpose--and why you are spending the money to install it--is to exhaust smoke and grease. If you install the hood too high, which would be above a 36" distance to the cooktop, the smoke and grease would be able to escape the capture of the hood before they can rise to that height. Too low would mean you wouldn't be able to peer into a tall pot on the back burner, and would also give a cramped appearance to the cooking area. Even setting those intrinsic facts aside, there may be people with varying heights living in the home, so how would you satisfy all their heights. In addition, if you adjust the height of the hood to your own height, what happens when you move from the home and taller or shorter people move in, or you move into a home where shorter or taller people lived before. And finally, the concern that people have about banging their heads is unnecessary. Very quickly the brain realizes the location of the hood, like after 1 or 2 cooking sessions, and you don't bang your head.

Sounds like a good decision. And don't worry about the trim being finished on site. When my house was new, all the trim was done by spraying and painting on site. I had a small remodel done a couple of years ago and had the trim finished off site. When it was installed, the nail holes had to be filled and sanded, and another coat of finish had to be applied. It looks good, but not quite as good as the original trim done on site. As long as the painting crew wipes down the surfaces, vacuums well, and masks properly before finishing, you should be happy with the result.

Yes, but a competent finisher can do both.

On an electric cooktop, there's no "too close" other than what would get in your way while cooking. Getting too close to gas can cause fun and games with the flames being sucked in odd directions.
