Remove the shutters, they don't belong on those type of double windows (they are too small) nor the bay window. Change your landscaping rather than painting the brick. It will bring out your homes best features.

Your windows have a brick trim on the top and bottom. When you get appropriate landscaping the whole house will look fresh. Use a landscape designer. Not a big box store. You will be amazed at what a modern landscape can do for the front of your home.

Perhaps leave the brick unpainted, remove the shutters as Denita suggested, and have a dark door/garage door/window trim? Good luck with your project!

Why, why, and why? These windows, door, and garage door are consistent with each other and cohesive to the house as a whole. You're not going to acheive a better look by changing them. You could paint the door a nice colour but that is where I would stop.

I'm a little baffled by this. The only thing I could remotely imagine a window 'saying' is "I keep out the weather." The windows don't need to be a super special feature on this house. And even if they were that, what is there is the perfect choice. So unless they need replacing for practical reasons save your money!

The door could be a nice colour as mentioned earlier, to sort of telegraph the personality/design aesthetic of the home owners.

Thanks for your feedback. The windows and garage door need to be replaced and I personally do not like the front door. Since the windows are being replaced I hoped to update the look. I agree the landscaping and door color would help but want to make sure I look at all options before investing the money and hope for some ideas that I may not have thought of.

Don't paint the brick.

I definitely wouldn't paint the brick. You have a classic and easy brick color. Does the garage lack insulation or something? I really think it works well with your home.

On your new windows maybe look at a bronze trim rather than white. It'd open up your paint options for the rest of the home if you're looking to do something other than white.

I'm on the fence about the shutters, I'm not a fan of shutters, but also think your windows may look naked without them.

Dark wood door and garage would be pretty with your brick.

Also, this picture says 2010, but if those hedges are still there I'd get them trimmed or remove them in favor of some more interesting plants.

Windows rarely need replacing unless they are extremely poor quality. Those don’t seem to be. Perhaps you’ve been victim of a salesperson there? If they are the original wood windows, a homeowner willing to do the maintenance of a proper rebuild can keep them going for many many more years. Storm windows add efficiency that is equal to modern double glazing as well.

There is rarely a need to rip out and replace any of the items you are replacing. And fashion certainly shouldn’t dictate a 50K expense every time someone thinks something isn’t “current” anymore. Fashion comes and goes. Style remains. That home has style. Classic style. And bad landscaping. That’s all that is really needing to be changed.

Thanks for the visual! That helps a lot. If the window where changed to a darker color, would the house trim need to be changed as well? What color would you suggest to complement the brick? The windows and garage door must be changed not just a want. The picture is older and the landscape has changed a bit but still terrible and need of a change. Since this is a new house to us we are trying to do the house first then address the landscaping. Thanks

You can’t paint the windows? Or the garage door? I mean, I just replaced a 50 year old garage door on a project, but it wasn’t because s paint job wouldn’t rejuvenate its looks.

I'd recommend setting an overall plan including landscape and the actual exterior of the house before moving forward even if you're tackling them separately. It helps to have a complete overview to avoid regrets or multiple changes to the same thing.

Your trim really could be many colors to go with white windows and many to go with bronze. White windows can be very stark and bronze or another neutral window frame can sometimes be less noticeable. Depends on your preference, search around houzz, google, etc and find some inspiration photos. If you post those here people can help guide you. Or if you show them to a landscape architect they can nail something down.

Just change the landscape. The house is fine as is.

If your windows are not energy efficient but the wood framing is good, you do not have to replace the entire window. Look into just replacing the sashes. A lot less expensive and a do it yourself job if you are handy. I advise against vinyl windows. I agree have a staged plan before you touch anything.

The brick wall depends on the style of the doors and windows.

Such as, if you replace them by wooden windows and door with dark color, I think you don't have to print the wall, or if you change them into a different style, the brick should be painted completely :)

Stephanie we are trying to decide what kind of windows and garage door to use as replacement. My first thought was to paint the brick but as pointed out they are in good condition and I am open to leaving as is. That leaves questions on window type, trim color and shutters-no shutters.

The truth is that a vinyl window will not hold up as well as the older windows you have and will look awful on your house. A better quality window will cost you between $500-$1000 each to replace.

I agree with everyone else regarding that the landscaping is what needs to change. That and remove the awful shutters that don't work with the house.

Window type: exactly the same as what you have now. Or you could switch to bronze, brown, or almond colour in the same style.

Trim colour: lots of options look good with your brick. Going through the rainbow: spicy reds like cayenne, paprika; rust orange; terra cotta; mustard; olive green; forest green; sage green; navy; cadet blue; indigo; plum; aubergine; grey to match mortar; slate; greige; taupe; charcoal; black; tan

Unless the windows you have are rotting,and cant be repaired, I would keep them. If they just need reglazing, it is a fairly simple procedure. I have all the original windows in my 1968 house. My house is stone. No rot or damage to the frames, but, every single window needed reglazing. I did them all myself, in about 3 days time, and I am a 79 yr old female.

The overall look is tired and harsh. Soften it, add life. Paint the trim, windows and garage door a darker color. Make the landscaping work for you, not against you.

I'm convinced half of this effect is due to the stupid filter every real estate listing seems to use on their photos now. Why do they overexpose it like that? It makes every house/room look like a place I don't want to be.

I agree the house is tired, and this picture is older. Looking to freshen and update. We have not moved in yet but want to have some ideas or direction to start with when we do. I know many have mentioned to work with the windows and garage door that is there but they are in need of replacing. The price of the house was reflective of that need. Thanks for the feed back

Greg the home inspector, they have rot and are single pane, there are no storm windows. I appreciate how so many are trying to save me money:).

It is the home inspector's job to say they need to be replaced. Please listen to almost everyone here who says that you can fix the windows. Storm windows can be added and it will cost a heck of a lot less than new quality windows.
