Purple Couch - Area Rug Suggestions

I have this purple couch that I need to find an area rug for. I have 2 little kids, so I, hoping to make this not super formal. I’m thinking an ivory/beige but need suggestions. The rest of my house is a majority of Pottery Barn if that helps for design style. Thanks!

"purple" as any other color has hundreds of shades. It can be cooler, warmer, muted, bright..

    The picture would help, really

But even if you describe the fabric it's made of, and find a pic of similar color in the internet it will inform us much more than just a word "purple"

(btw I also have a purple sofa)) Mine is dark aubergine and leather. If it was, say, velvet and plum-it'd influence my rug choice differently

or maybe not because I can't seem to find a rug I really love under 5K..

but I'm very picky to tell you the truth. not everybody needs his rug to be all that like it's some magic flying carpet)

in short. the more detailed info you give-the more helpful suggestions we'll be able to give too

wow while I was writing my essay you answered!!

and hey it is velvet and plum, so hooray to me too..we're awesome))

so. .a vibe that's not too stuffy..ease of cleaning matters I suppose? hint on a buget if possible? others things that will go in the room or impossible to know, at the moment, and you're starting with the rug as inspiration? wall color stays, right?

Silver and gray look really good with that purple, and the rug could also have black in it.

Wall color is a painters color for now, but will most likely be a greige color. Since the room isn’t huge, I was thinking a coffee table and 2 chairs. I’d say my budget for a rug would be $600 and less.

silver and gray and something with yellow in it like chartreuse..and..

well, depends also how much pattern and how many colors one wants to have. what's the overall vibe. something vibrant or something maybe understated?

That's such a great couch and with little ones, I'd want something kind of "fun". This came up when googling for purple area rugs, but it's difficult to say if it really has purple in it (but it seems to). 100% polypropylene so totally carefree. $279 for 7'10" x 11 (not sure what size you're thinking). Maybe these aren't formal enough! :-)

5' x7'6" $469 all wool (larger size close to $1,000:
    8x10 Polypropylene $206

I'm sure these are not options you might have been thinking about but that second one from Overstock is quite nice.

    $118 for 7x10 from Wayfair

Thank you! If I went with a natural jute rug, would that be too “relaxed” for this couch?

I really love vibrant ones especially the first with its tribal patter..easiert to look clean too. I agree than inside-outside might be a good choice..I found many tufted and silk rugs right now when looking, and whatnot, but these are harder to keep clean ..and hand knotted wool which is the best-is going for sure to be over the budget, in bigger sizes

now also knowing the colors of wall will change most likely to become warmer-that calls for warmer colors in rugs too...not all of them if there are many in the pattern, but the majority of them. also when there is a pattern one can have real fun with picking colors from it

but it is a matter of personal preference so tell us what yours is

frankly-I'm afraid to post until I know some more. If you don't know for now which direction you'd prefer-then it's a different matter; the more rugs you can see the better

you can repeat purple as shown above, in your pattern, and would be cool too. You'll juxtapose it with other touches of colors elsewhere

actually, it's a very versatile color, your purple. Or so I think. Greens would look cool, deep blues will..oranges..oh I'm shutting up for now

I agree, so many colours look good with plum.

I would avoid ivory/cream/white. Kids will be kids and should get to be. They can't help it that they are grubby little things a large percentage of the time! Better to go with a mid-tone and/or some pattern and save you all a lot of angst.

"If I went with a natural jute rug, would that be too “relaxed” for this couch?"..umm..I'd say yes..would be too relaxed

so you prefer something more quiet, understated?

A natural jute rug would take away some of the drama of the purple velvet - but you could have a gray jute rug, and it could also have a pattern.

Yes, I think I prefer something a little quieter. Most of my decor is pretty calm nothing super colorful/vibrant!

    hm

not easy. meeds to be quiet, not very pale in color, durable I suppose..

that's one of my(theoretically) favorite jute rugs..with leather too, which will make it superdurable

very strong rough rug .big juxtaposition to your sofa

yet somehow-I've no idea why..I can see it better in your room than just a natural jute. It will be a challenge for sure to marry these. But maybe an interesting one

It's a bit too higher in 8 by 10 than you prefer..but at least somehow they charge normal shipping for it

    https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/leather-twined-rug?category=rugs&color=001

(look how they illustrated it in rooms with totally different decor. so not easy, no. but to me, leather here is a bit of a bridge, somehow. Hard to explain. I'll think about it

There are fantastic jute rugs, it's just the more fantastic they seem to me the more expensive they become.

(free shipping would be even better..one needs to check ecarpetgallery..which I'm going to do right now I guess)

or..less of a fun, and reviews are worse. but the colors are nice. the challenge will stay, to a degree

they have many rugs in jute..that I believe would be better choice than just natural jute,

    check them out

(I would put your couch on the end wall, so you can see it as an amazing focal point when you look into the room!)

Olychick , do you recall where the first rug you pictured is available?

It was at allmodern.com. As was the 2nd one. The third was at houzz, just in case anyone else is wondering (and I'll forget soon!)

I wouldn’t go with jute if kids are going to hang out in there. It’s very rough to the touch and spills will be almost impossible to clean up because of the texture.

I agree with saypoint btw. maybe not very-very rough, but definitely not soft. and not the best option when it comes to cleaning

    depends on personal priorities.

but yes, in my book not worth overcomplicating it, in this case. if it'd fit the concept of the room like a glove, then that's another matter

on the other hand if one wants to try it anyway. one can order whatever rug he likes, in smaller size. see how if feels, how it looks like. also less of headache to return it if it doesn't fit

Not jute! I had jute rugs from world market years ago and they were the worst. Water would leave marks and they shed dirt or something. Seagrass is a better option I believe. However, I'd pick a colorful patterned rug to go with your purple sofa.

love that couch. I'd bring in ivories, lilac, lavender, silver/gold, green plants,

    some other color combos

Thank you so much, Olychick. My granddaughter really likes it and is considering itl

Nice couch. I like Teeda's mock up best.

Thank you! Teeda do you know where that rug is from in your mock-up? I actually do like that!

Beth H - I love all your suggestions too! Do you know where the rug is from in your mock-up also? Thanks!

Hi Sarah, the rug is called Frandsen blue/camel from One Kings Lane. When I googled it I also found it available on BHG, so you can probably find in other places as well. Here's the linkOne Kings Lane
