Adding Architectural interest

I'm thinking of adding the above Dome over my dining room table to add some drama.

Anyone have experience or strong feeling (for/against)? Should I add a chandelier?

This is an open concept smaller home with 9' ceilings.

Bring in the drama with a nice chandelier.

If by dome you mean this,

then yes it can add architectural interest to an otherwise boring ceiling. If you do decide on putting it up then yes add a chandelier over the table that suits your style. :)

    Yawn!
Your room needs color, texture, a rug, an interesting light fixture, art, two chests or consoles under the high windows, and more color. A chandelier does not need to be dripping with crystal...it can be modern with five to seven bulbs on interesting arms. **A boob light on the ceiling will not work.**
Search Houzz photos for "dining room lighting" or "dining rooms" for many many suggestions.

Read people :) The poster is showing a dome that attaches to the ceiling. It's not a flush mount light or " boob light. "

Its an ugly light. Period. : )

Jan what are you not understanding ? It's not a light fixture.

jan is using a ittybitty device i'm thinking.

back to the OP. i don't believe that choice is handsome. just add a chandelier to your dining room, and skip the other bit.

That does nothing to add interest , your space is small get a nice chandeleir and be done add a piece of art if there is a wall for it.

I think it's fully understood that the dome is not a light fixture. The poster asked for opinions on it and they are given.

Big device. It's ugly. Get a pendant or chandelier. BIG PRINT: IT'S UGLY, GET A PENDANT OR CHANDELIER. : )

    And keep it simple.

An ugly tumor on the ceiling is not “architectural interest”.

Architectural interest would be a coffered ceiling, or expanded windows, or something that actually affects the architecture of the home.

Sorry but this size surface mounted dome will conflict with your HVAC ceiling grille.

I'd like to suggest the West Elm Mobile Grand Chandelier in bronze on a dimmer. I think it would provide the interest you desire. You can add smaller bulbs to this fixture. Add a center piece and you're done.

2wiseguys get the idea. We're having the room painted soon, and I like the

idea of the dome/chandelier together. Thanks for helping me see it. Would

you really use such a large chandelier?

This one from West Elm is 29" in Diameter

It depends on the size of your room and table which I don't know the
size of but for example if your table was about 50 inches round and your
ceilings are 9 ft, a chandelier about 32 inches in diameter would be in
    proportion. :)

I think the one you've chosen is too big. It is nearly as wide as your dining table, and since it's white and solid it commands more attention than your glass table.

My preference is to skip it, or to choose a much smaller version like Beverly shows.

This article is helpful. True, the dome does look like an oversized boob light at first glance, but you don't need it anyway. Put the saved $$ on the new light fixture that won't interfere with the ceiling vent.

You don't need DOME/ medallion ...... anything.......at all, Why in heck call attention to a VENT? Call attention to a light, not that from which it hangs.

To add architectural interest, considering adding ceiling or wall trim. (Check out photos of coffered ceilings and/or "wall grid" on Houzz). One or the other will add more interest than a ceiling medallion. Most importantly, a beautiful light fixture will be money well spent!

    1. Consensus seems to be to use a chandelier. Period. The table is 64" wide and the base is a brownish stone. Would a crystal chandelier be to formal? What about a metal chandelier?

    2. Any ideas on decorating the wall behind the table? It's not wide enough to add other furniture, tables, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh,

    3. painters come next week. Paint will be SW Kiliim Beige. Out with the boring

    4. SW Agreeable Gray.

Please share more pictures of the room - especially the wall that you're asking about.

    1. Just sent more photos. Getting ready to paint and took down the drapes, Think they're throwing things off. I'm thinking BM Grant Beige or SW Malabar 9110.
    2. Am open to any ideas. Room is north facing. Wanted you to see my table,
    3. which is a stone, so as much as I like a crystal chandelier, it may be too fancy.
    4. We live in Austin.
    5. If you need additional photos, let me know.
    6. I really wanted to add the dome over the table, but that's been...wait for it...
    7. tabled.
    8. Help!

Did you really want the dome - or - just to do something different with the ceiling?

How about replacing those little short windows with something larger? That’s a start to adding architecture.

I'm glad you decided against adding an upside down dog dish to your ceiling.

Add a big window. Looks like you could really use the light in this space.
