Changing hallway lighting fixures.

last modified: 8 years ago

I've got flush-mounted, builder grade light fixtures in my hallway that are about 8" wide max. I'm going to be changing them out so I looked at the first 12-15 entries on advice when I searched Houzz for advice on choosing a hallway light. This is the kind/proportion that came up:

This is the size/proportion I like, and I really love this one:

So I have two questions: First, am I going too small? The halll is about 18 feet long and 3.5 feet wide. Lights on both ends of hall. Second, is this multi-color pendant too much for a small hall? I really love it because it's so jazzy!

But this is more like what I'll probably put up:

So my question is about proportion and length. The ceiling is 8' and I have about 17" between the ceiling and where the top of one door would swing out and hit the light, if it were hanging too low. The minimum height on this last one would work in the space. How do you think it would look?

I think it would depend on your style throughout the house. Also that is quite a lomg hall way, how many are you going to put?

I"d put one at each end of the hall (I'm sorry, I don't have pics). I'm slowly changing to a mid-century look, and my den will be the first transformation. It's the room that everyone gathers in to socialize and watch TV and it needs a remodel most. DS is graduating this week and will be moving out (fingers crossed) and the den will get less abuse than it has been getting and I can invest in some things with an eye more toward looks/fashion than utility.

I'd like to do something like this with my fireplace, which
adjoins the hall. It would go from here:

    To here:

Minus the toys and the toddler and no tv over the fireplace.
There are a lot more dramatic pictures of fireplaces like these but I tried to
find one that was more like the room it's going to go into instead of a great
    room in a $1M home.

My fall back would be this, but I was hoping to find something a little less vanilla.

How many bulbs are in your current flush mount builder grade fixtures? Are they also one each? Two pendent lights don't seem enough to me to illuminate such a long hallway and it seems odd to put pendent lights in a hallway.

I'm not sure just how mid-century or jazzy you want to go, and these are certainly not my taste, but here are some options:

I have a very long hallway in my house and paid close attention to the lighting because it is one way to make such a boring area look spectacular. I searched high and low on etsy, e-bay, online vintage lighting stores, and in brick and mortar vintage lighting stores. I found some pretty fantastic fixtures that get such compliments from everyone who comes in our house. Lighting fixtures are my thing! Give me a neutral room with a spectacular light fixture any day!

They're one-bulb flush fixtures and I wouldn't mind going flush if I could find something semi-interesting. The ones I've seen all look kinda builder grade. I'm looking for a shade that doesn't show the bulb and gives out a soft light.

No, think one-story 70's ranch. Every room in the house except the kitchen and dining room open into this hallway. I don't have a picture of it, I'll fix that tonight, sorry.
This is the fixture I was going to hang in the foyer, which is 6x10 with an 8' ceiling. I'll post a pic of that tonight, too.

Have you shopped on Houzz? Did those all look builder grade too?

This is the hallway in question. I'm tired of light fixtures that just look like mushrooms, of whatever color, stuck to the ceiling. I have looked on Houzz, Wayfair, West Elm, Overstock and LightingDirect.com and haven't found flush lighting that I like.

With an 8' ceiling you require a flush or semi flush fixture, NOT A PENDANT LIGHT. Your fixture cannot hange below 7' tall or the height of the 80" doors.

What if you hung it short?

You can't hang a pendant in a hall with an 8-foot ceiling. There's not enough drop to make it look like a pendant.

Also, keep in mind that you're probably going to have to touch-up the ceiling and paint it when you take the old fixtures down unless you buy new lights with a base that's as large or larger than what's there now. I had that problem when I replaced the lights in my house.

I understand about the painting. I don't like the lights I have in there now and want something different. The hallway is small and my current lights are about 8" in diameter. There are a lot of nice flush and semi-flush mount lights but they are either too big around or look a little too basic/builder grade for what I want. The lights can't be flashy or ornate. Beverly posted many that are pretty, but just too much for this space. Something like this would work, but it's pretty boring.

I also can't justify spending much more than $85 each.

I appreciate all the input. For me, kitchens are easy to design but I think I've developed tunnel vision. I can't seem to picture what something will look like unless there are cabinets involved ;)

Thanks Beverly, I like the last one, and I found this one just a few minutes ago.

It comes in brushed nickel, too and is only 12" across.

Thank you, Beverly, but I've bought lights online from Lowe's before and something's always been broken or wrong, and their in-store selection is sad. I've gotten a lot of products from LightingDirect.com and Build.com and they've always come through fine. This hallway needs something smaller than what I've found, it needs to be simple, contemporary but with a little visual interest.

Actually, I found this on Houzz and it might work better.

Lives seems rather builder grade to me too.

With 8' ceilings I would just consider adding can lighting down the hall.

Bev, the Livex doesn't have a nipple. I'm thinking that can lights are the way to go. The reality is that it's not a big hallway and two 15" fixtures are going to overpower it. I thought a small pendant, like the white one I posted, would fill the bill of shedding light but not look too dominating.

I want something simple, with a little bit of detail but not too much, which is what I saw in the last two pictures I posted. I feel that they are still a bit big but finding something smaller that looked like someone put some effort into designing, that just doesn't seem possible. And even when I search, ranking price for highest to lowest, I still don't find anything that matches that description in the size I need, even in the $1,000 range.
