you need to think in garden time .. and you will have to wait and see how they react ... by the end of this season.. you ought to have a good chance of understanding if what is there.. will fill in somewhat ..

that said.. unless you have peeps laying on the sidewalk.. i dont see how this greatly impacts your privacy ...

what i really want to know.. is how much digging they did in the root zone ... did they basically remove the old walk.. and just replace it ... with not much soil disturbance???

i would insure proper watering all this summer ... see link ... you will have to figure our haw water moves in your soil ... good deep drinks and then near drying is the plan .... some mulch wouldnt hurt ...

they will be stressed this season .. hence the watering.. but they will not be hungry.. fert is not a response to this ...

ps.. perhaps you can plant some annuals on the inside of the hedge ... i wouldnt try on the sidewalk side.. no need to do more root damage ... and there isnt enough space .. imo ...
