My phosphate tests

last modified: 8 years ago

Ok, I got the Aquachek phosphate test and tested:

Sears ultra plus....nothing registered. I expected that.

Mexican Ariel with Downy...less than 200 parts per billion...which was the smallest amount.

Ace....almost 500 parts per billion..

Vietnamese Tide...between 200 and 500 parts per billion.

Ok, this is what has me a bit worried. I also tested the Sodium Tripolyphosphate that I bought from Dafna. Nothing came up.

My daughter said it might be because the Aquachek only checks for phosphate ions. P04 to 3-.

So she is saying that the Sodium Tripolyphosphate is not an ion because it is bonded with the sodium.

But if that is so, what is causing the reaction in the detergents? What kind of phosphate is in them?

Right now I just want to know that I have not spent quite a bit of money on fake STPP.

I don't want to contact Dafna and accuse them of selling fake stuff if the test doesn't test for STPP.

I just don't understand what kind of phosphate is in the detergents making it register.

I am not a chemist so I have no clue about these things.

My daughter is a chemistry/biology major, so she does this kind of stuff all the time and has used these same test kits in the lab.

She says there are many different kinds of compounds that have phosphates.

Do you have any STPP from The Chemistry Store?

    The Chemistry Store

What happens when you test a Liquid Detergent? Just curious.

    Hmmmm...interesting

    Calling MITCH!!

I think we've been taken by dafna. Dont have proof but I suspect.

Jody can you post this over on AW . There is a guy very very educated in phosphates over there.

Laundry detergent uses Sodium TripolyPhosphate. Thats the phosphate Dafna supposedly sells.

If Sodium Tripolyphosphate got into a river and the water was tested it would not come up showing nothing.

We all suspected in the past Dagna messed up. What's to say they didn't do it on purpose. ..what's cheaper than STPP? Maybe borax or washing soda.

I no longer have a membership over at AW because those guys would never respond to my posts.

No, I don't have any STPP from the chemistry store.

I don't have any liquid laundry detergent with phosphates, so I can't test and I don't know if it would work anyway because of the dye. The aquachek shows the phosphate level by how blue the water turns when mixed with the chemical in the test.

My daughter was saying that the detergent may have another phosphate mixed in that is not STPP. Most laundry detergents already have so many other sodium based ingredients, it makes sense that they may use a phosphate that is not bonded with another sodium.

I would hate to think that we all have been spending money on fake STPP from dafna. There has to be another test that we can use.

I am going to call my city water department and see if they will test it for me. I know they test people's water for hardness, so I will see if they can run a test and tell me if the STPP shows up.

My only concern is what if they ask me what I am doing with it? LOL, what do I say?

Sounds like a couple of you have been suspicious of Dafna in the past, why is that? What happened? And yes Mama, they could be using something other than Phosphate. Salt will make the water slippery. Salt is what is used in water softeners, so that certainly makes sense.

I will be pissed if they have been selling fake stuff. Seems like others would have tested it by now though.

I'm not sure what other "type" of phosphate they would use in detergents.

I did notice that my last bag of STPP was a larger particle and ended up clumping more than the first and the current bag that I have. The new bag is about 2 months old and flows freely. Hmm.

Well it would be a complex phosphate regardless.

Jody do you have any tsp in the garage? Look around your paint or wall scrubbing supplies.

I used to have some, but I think my husband used it all trying to get the mildew off the house. Will look, why, do you want me to test it?

I was going to buy some STPP from the chemistry store and test it, but not willing to pay $24 for shipping a $13 item.

I bought sttp from pro supply on amazon and with the test strips I have it shows it has phosphates in them. I suspect dafna store either mislabeled or knowingly swapped it for something cheaper. Sad sad.

On another note I tested a a bag of vietinemese tide (new bag just got today) and it shows phosphates. I must of had a older bag (was different that the one I had from before) without them in it. Suds way way too much for me in my front loaders (tested it in Electrolux and Miele. Both needed fabric softner to calm the suds down with just a tablespoon of detergent with a full load of towels) so can’t use it but to actually handwash as it was designed. Will work good for the nasty clothes hubby sometimes comes home with and are soaked in a bucket outside with hot water and detergent.

"Jody: Salt will make the water slippery. Salt is what is used in water softeners, so that certainly makes sense."

Salt in water softeners is used to regenerate the resin bed that performs the ion-exchange process of softening the water, a chemical reaction of exchanging calcium ions for sodium ions (or potassium ions if potassium salt is used instead of sodium salt). The resin bed is backflushed with salt water to remove the collected calcium ions and refresh it with sodium ions, and the salt water is drained out of the unit. Salt is not put directly into the water the softener produces.

Larisa, not to get off subject here but was it you looking for All powder(stainfighter) in the blue box? I saw it last night 120 load box on jet.com

If it wasn't you maybe whoever it was will see this.

I was disappointed in the low amount of phosphates my Mexican Ariel had. I would love to find more of the Ace. The only store I found it in only had two small packages.

I am not sure what to do about the Dafna STPP. It was strange that they closed their store down for awhile and then charged more for the STPP when they reopened. I just think that if they are selling fake stuff, they would have been caught by now. I don't know!

I will look into the pro supply, I, along with many others on here have bought so many pounds of that stuff. To think that it hasn't done anything for our laundry...or not what was anticipated by the buyers. Yes, that is sad. I just got some in the mail last week.

Ace powder detergent you can get on amazon. A large box for 22.99 or smaller box for 15.99. That’s where I’ve been getting it. Before I ordered from pro supply i called them (just happened to be in my home state of Washington and my birth city ha) and they were very informative. They also told me if I had any issues to let them know and would help figure it out. Not hadn’t one issue with their stock of sttp and have bought several bags from them.

As for the bags you just got I would be emailing them or trying to return them as it’s not the quality we have known and expect. Giving them the benefit don the doubt here and hopeful it was just a bad batch and they didn’t tamper with it.

The only problem is, I have already mixed half of it with my Sears Ultra Plus. I tested the Ultra plus with it added and when that didn't come up as having phosphates, that is when I tested the stuff by itself.

Makes me sad and mad all at the same time. I wonder now if any of the stuff I have bought has been good?

I have a canister of Sears Ultra Plus that I mixed with STPP from awhile back and it didn't test for phosphates either. I may not have ever had the real thing.

But when my husband used to work at the oil refinery, I used the detergent mixed with it and his clothes came out really clean.

I don't have the answer. I do know I will never buy from Dafna again.

I just wrote this message to Dafna:

I was curious about the laundry detergents that I have that are from other countries because I have heard that they contained STPP. All of them tested between 200 and 500 parts per billion when I used the Aquachek phosphate test kit.

Then I checked my Sears Ultra Plus that I had added the STPP that I bought from you, and it did not have any result at all.

So, I tested the STPP by itself and it also had no result, meaning it did not show any phosphates present.

Can you explain how this can be?

    Thank you

As for Dafna being found out already if they were scamming. Maybe not. Its not food grade so their wouldn't be issues there. Maybe others just use it and never question it. I highly doubt most folks are like us they arnt testing their detergents for phosphates nor are they testing their phosphates for phosphates. LOL.

Jody the letter sound perfect. I will be interested in their reply.

I will let you know what they say. I know I have spent close to $60 on their stuff, but more than the money, I worry about what they are using. What have I been putting in my Sears Ultra Plus?

Remember here while back when I posted the batch I opened from Dafna did not dissolve? It did not even look or feel like previous orders of STPP from Dafna. It has a heavier, denser feel to it and some chunks throughout the bag. I really don’t think it is STPP. When this happened to several of us before they blamed it on an employee mislabeling or mispackaging it. I just noticed on Amazon the stpp does come in different density....

    Dafna responded

Thanks for your inquiry. The product we sell is 100% sodium tripoly phosphate. It is purchased in 50 pound bags and is used to fill the bags we sell. The aquachek phosphate test is sold to test phosphates in pool and spa water. We suggest you contact the manufacturer to see whether it is designed to test phosphate levels in regular water. We guarantee our product to be 100% tripoly phosphate.

So, next I emailed the manufacturer and will see what they say.

I don't see how it would be much different as far as the different kinds of water, but I am not a chemist.

So tell them you mixed some of the stpp into your spa water. Lol

Jody is there a way to buy from the manufacturer cutting out the middle man (Dafna)

    last modified: 8 years ago

I don't know. You would have to find out who the manufacturer is and Dafna is not going to tell you.

I haven't heard anything from Aquachek yet.

Have to say this is quite disturbing. We really have no idea what we've been putting in our laundry.

Wish there was someone here that uses STPP from a different source from Dafna that could check theirs.

I ran this by one of Amiees doctors on the phone today. She said she's not exactly eduucated in this but her opinion is if the tester gives a reading on phosphates in detergent it should do so with the STPP also as they would both be complex phosphates. But we're not to take her opinion to the bank.

There should be a place that the stpp could be tested...a lab...I just don't know what type of lab.

My gut is saying this isn’t sttp and gonna say their employee did it again if more complain. Might be worth it for others to email and say it was tested and nothing came up on the test strips to see what they say then. At the very least they might ship actual sttp.

I retested the sttp from pro supply with a pool test strip my sister in law had and it came up as phosphates as well. So two different test strips and both say phosphates. I’m pretty sure what you got from dafna wasn’t phosphates.

I had issues with Dafna STPP not dissolving a while back, and that quite frankly left a bad taste in my mouth. They sent me a replacement bag, but I just don't trust it enough to use it to be completely honest.

I've been buying from Pro Supply ever since, and use their sodium percarbonate as well with nothing but good results. I'd also trust Chemistry Store, but won't be buying from any of the less established vendors going forward, even if their product is less expensive.

I know I have bought this stuff from Dafna at least 3 times. I certainly don't trust them any longer.

I don't like wasting money and certainly don't like being made a fool of. I already left them positive feedback, so I can't take that back on ebay.

Mama, when you get your phosphate tester, please test your STPP from Dafna if you still have any and let me know what the results are.

I'm glad I saw this post. I bought from Dafna a few times and was ready to order more STTP since I am running low. I went and ordered from Pro Supply.

I don't know if I want to order any more or not. I have enough phosphate laden detergent, I really don't need the additive. If I order from another supplier and it turns out with a positive phosphate result, I will just get more pissed.

I've always ordered from Chemistry Store ... but am now keeping several family members supplied so the last two or three orders have been from Dafna via either eBay or Amazon. I don't have any phosphate testing tools but I haven't noticed anything suspicious about the product.

Jody I do have a tiny bit And I'll test it. I have 20 pounds at my cousins house from my last order quite awhile ago. ..over a year and I'm sure even longer. I will for sure test it. And remember this batch is not new.

Well, I can't remember when I bought the supply that I mixed with the Sears Ultra Plus, but I know it wasn't from this last order and it didn't register on the test either.
