Choosing a clothes washer

Our washer recently broke after 12 years of good service and we bought a Samsung top load HE washer. We gave it an honest try for 10 days but it didn't work out. In the absence of an impeller, clothes didn't move much and comforters kept floating. In a nutshell, clothes were not washing clean. Fortunately, we were able to return it.

The recent HE craze is requiring people to make too many compromises in washer effectiveness. All we want is a reliable machines that washes well and is not too noisy.

I'm thinking of two options - either to buy new front loading washer/dryer set or to find one of the older large capacity workhorse models and get it rebuilt if necessary.

What makes and models would you recommend?

Honestly, it's hard to recommend an exact model number, because everyone has different needs. Some people need 24" Inch - Compact Models, Some People have colour requirements, Some people prefer certain features like steam, and so on. It's all pretty variable.

The best advice I can give you - is to purchase by Brand, instead of Model. Know the brand you want going in, and then look at Lowes.com, ABT, or AJMadison and shop from there.

Bosch, Miele, Electrolux, and certain Whirlpool models come to the front of my mind. And... LG, Samsung, and Asko on my avoid/steer clear list.

The Bosch 500 & 800 Series, would be my first choice, honestly. Designed well, wash well, and built to last. The Electrolux Titatinum FL would come in a close 2nd.

I have much better effectiveness from my front loader than I ever did from my previous top loaders. I'm never getting a top loader again. My current LG pair are in their tenth year and doing well.

I'd definitely recommend Miele or LG. Miele's new W1/T1 machines are great but they are compact and average about $3000 - $4000 for a pair. LG has different features, colors, sizes, and price options.

The Samsung top-loaders have been on safety recall. They tend to explode during the spin cycle.

Search the Laundry Room forum for up to date opinions, but if you want reliability over the long term, it is likely that the Speed Queen line will be a good choice.

I've seen videos of the Electrolux 617 that shakes really bad when on spin cycles. I wonder it this was fixed on the new 627 model? But the only difference I see is they can now used Pods in the detergent tray.
