Annie Laurie McDowell is a "mom"!

It's only taken twenty-plus years, but I finally got around to trying Annie Laurie McDowell in breeding. There is one self seedling, which is "interesting", pretty but not overly vigorous. The best results have been using her pollen on Nessie, my Montecito X Mlle Cecile Brunner monster. The seven

results range from a foot tall plant, thornless, maniacally flowering plant which doesn't grow, but flowers with every new cell it produces; through smaller climbers with varying degrees of prickles; to some which seem they want to be monsters and haven't flowered yet (their second year). This one is scented, with few prickles and seems to want to be a medium size. It's taken over a week for this thing to open!

I apologize for the unattractive background, but there is limited space and the plants had to go somewhere they could grow and not be blown over by the wind. Not shabby for nearly two year old seedlings.

After reading of the issues many are experiencing posting here, I tried a fifth photo and it worked. I am wondering if any of the Houzz issues might be fixed if you clear your browser and do a disk clean? I'm using Google Chrome, run a regular disk clean and clear my browsing history regularly to keep things operating quickly. It hasn't given me any issues posting this. Now, just for fun...

Now that is good news, ALMcD is such a wonderful rose, surely it will enrich our stock of climbers in time.

Thanks, Marlorena. I have made numerous gardens, and many for others. This is a "laboratory", a HUGE pot ghetto. But, it has to be or cycling plants through to use and evaluate would be even more back breaking than it is.

It's very lovely, and reminds me a bit of Mlle. Franziska Krueger. Please feel free to send me the little "maniacally blooming" one. My garden could certainly use it!

Thank you. I don't think it's going to be sufficiently vigorous for your extreme heat, Ingrid. It's 75F here now at 2 PM, but the wind chill makes it feel 68 F.

Congratulations, Kim! Does this mean that you are a proud father? :-) That's a beautiful rose. Medium shrub, few prickles and has enough of a sense of herself to keep you waiting a full week for the unveiling: I like her! As Ingrid noted, she does resemble MFK. I have always been a MFK admirer, but I know some do not like the fact she is prone to vegetative centers. You may have hit on the perfect solution! The bloom color is lovely shade of mellow sunrise, and the burgundy stems are a perfect foil! Carol

Is she a peachy pink, color? It’s hard for me to tell, on my iPhone. She’s lovely, indeed! I love the darker center with the pale outer petals. I don’t think ALMD could beget an ugly child! Lisa

There is a lot of flesh and gold in there. I'm not sure how it will age as the petals were all removed today when I pollinated that bloom with George Washington Richardson/Mlle de Sombreuil. After seeing what crossing Nessie with George produced, I HAD to make this cross!

@Z10Socal easy to do (both). Look at my Breeder's Page on Help Me Find-Roses to see those I've added to the database there. Then, you may Google the subject; search the information posted to the Rose Hybridizers Association and even read my blog posts about how I do it. Those should provide you with some decent places to start. Good luck!
