Prize for best answer

This ugly house needs an inexpensive (read cheap) makeover.

What would you do for $5K or less to make it look more appealing from a 1st impression.

Be as specific as you can be please.

I'll pick the best answer and send you prize. (US only).

The exterior paint looks to be in great shape.

I would put the money into the front landscaping. Plant shrubs and a small tree for interest near your front porch. If possible, hire a local landscape design professional to give you a plan and plant list.

Get white pots to tie in your white vinyl windows and plant them with annuals to make the front porch more inviting.

Reduce the price $4,995 and add a pop of colour! Also, landscape the bed by the house...I'll allow the gardeners to tell ya how. And paint the front door.

Landscaping does wonders for curb appeal!

New front door. New light fixture. Bump the little porch out and over. Add some low voltage lighting along the path. Spend the rest of the $$$$ on plants, compost, etc.

Repaint the exterior to a lighter colour, maybe keep the door and porch colour as contrast. Then some new plants around the outside of the house (eg hedges).

Change the front door to a slab and paint it orange. Paint the trim and porch a lighter tan. Landscape with low plants. If anything's left, stage the inside.

Paint the dirt brown exterior to a pale appropriate color. A few small bushes. Contrasting aqua or orange front door paint. Pale aqua living room with the fireplace.

I'll go with BevFlad. That's what I would do. The 3rd photo she has of the barn color grey would be wonderful. The hostas are good because they come in bright greens and would pop in that front yard.

I like Beverly's suggestions. Just wondering...is the prize the house? ;-)

I agree landscaping is the biggest bang for the buck - on both sides in front of the foundation and also consider the washed out areas in front where grass doesn't grow because of too much shade or erosion - .
Maybe paint the front door a different color or install a new door with some glass panes on the upper portion of the door itself.

Staging for Sale? I agree w/TorontoVet.... Paint house in a lighter color. Using a fashion example...White makes a person look larger/fatter and Black is more slimming. Therefore, this small house will look smaller if it is darker, as it is already shadowed by many mature trees. Also, add wider trim around all windows/ door. Paint trim in contrasting warm beige. Since the door is on shadow, try to brighten it with color and lighting.Draw attention to it using colorful pots.

Re: Outer door.... Is this a storm door or a "birdcage" security door? If it is a heavy iron security door and the house is on the market, then remove the door. A security door gives the impression that it is a high-crime area (buyer turn-off).

Re:landscape....Fill the front planter with some plants. (I don't know your growing zone) TOPIARIES are quite useful! They are shaped and give the impression that like them, the house has been well-looked after. Add color with matching pots. Red is good as warm colors will photograph better because warm colors (red, orange, yellow will project, not recede.

I'd place two matching red pots near the edge of the porch and two larger red pots below the porch. Place 2 or 3 more pots along the front walking path to the door, depending how long it is. This will create a welcoming entrance for visitors expanding the entry area. The evergreens in this picture will have a long life and need little maintenance other than watering. The little white flowers add contrast and softness. . (Bonus : If staging for sale, you can take your pots with you). If selling and staging, then buy fake flowers (warm colors) at the Dollar store. Note: fake yellow and white flowers do not fade as dramatically as deeper toned fake flowers (red & purple)

other planter ideas for along the walking path. An impressive landscape gives the impression that the house has been given the same attention. These pretty plantings convey that idea.

Is this where you plan to live? Obtain a quote to remove the large trees in front of the house. Grass doesn't grow in the shade or under pine needles. The tree roots may be wrapping themselves around the pipes. It is something the potential buyers might be thinking too.

wide trim makes the windows and doors look bigger

    for sale? pots of annuals.

for yourself? i'd work at removing trees.... identify 2 that would 'frame' the house if all the rest were gone, keep those. the front yard will never thrive with that many trees.

the neighbor's house seen out a window looks modest... not sure what your inside looks like, in the kitchen, but if your buyer is likely to be young/starter, you might dazzle them with some grey paint. otherwise, no.

    Not a Pro.

I would change the door to a style that looked like this, after that I would spend it in landscaping.
