The deer will LOVE your mophead hydrangeas. Agree w/ gardengal on the firepower nandina, but I stopped using it years ago because it comes out of winter here (northern VA) looking like dog snot, and it takes forever to bounce back. It's not an interesting enough plant to earn its place based on that.

It's a fine plan for a landscaper. If you want something more interesting, that's where a landscape designer is useful.

I didn't want to influence the OP with my personal dislikes but 'Firepower' is my least favorite of any of the multiple nandina cultivars available and for much the same reasons as Revolutionary Garden describes....a dumpy, coarse looking plant prone to leaf spot and mildew and lacking any of the delicate, lacy leaf texture of other nandinas. Gets good winter color.....but then so does nearly any nandina. And there are other sterile or non-flowering forms out there if invasiveness is a concern.

Deer in my area will eat burning bush, all types of hydrangeas, sweetspire & liriope. I would suggest Shamrock Inkberry vs Compacta Inkberry & Hummingbird Clethra vs Sweetspire.

At my old house, I had to pay a lot of money to remove a bunch of nandina's that were growing around the house. I never liked them, whatever species it was - it was ugly (no offense to anyone who likes them). A quick google search told me it was invasive, so I just put down invasive next to it.

Not a fan of hollies, I am not sure what to replace them with. Dwarf evergreens? Anyone know of any evergreens that are deer resistant?

What is the difference between Shamrock and Compacta Inkberry? From a google search, I can only tell they're about a feet different in size.
