Filling in an incomplete Koi Pond

We bought our house with an incomplete obviously DIY Koi Pond that we really want to fill in because it is right in the middle of our yard. What are the steps to fill it in? We are in Colorado and I wasnt sure if just filling with sand would be ok or fill dirt or a mixture? What kind of compaction should we do on an area so large (approx 50'x9'x4')? Not super concerned about growing grass over it since we will possibly be putting in brick pavers. Large shrubs are now gone since they were filled with insects and were attracting snakes, and we might replant center plant elsewhere. The picture doesnt show the depth but the "pond" also extends back and to the right where the depth is much greater so 4' is a general assumption. Just trying to get rid of this darn hole in our backyard! And info is much appreciated, thanks in advance!

Sand, no. The issue you'll have is that if you want to build a patio over this, whatever you use for fill will need to be compacted in layers as you go.

We turned ours into a sunken patio to avoid all of the fill issues.

The issue is the rubber liner. Colorado may be arid and the liner may be cracked and leak, but any fill you put in there will be a marsh because that liner will slow or stop water percolating into the soil. You can't lay a patio on that. The liner has to go. Take that out then level the sides back into the depression. You may need less or no fill brought in at all.

I would hope that the liner would be removed A.S.A.P. regardless of what is done with the area. Can we see what the entire pond area looks like? Is there more on the right?

The picture doesn't confirm how the pond and surrounds are constructed. Assess whether you'll be able to use any existing materials (like rocks) and stockpile them if they're likely to be needed. As mentioned, remove the liner or render it to be non-water-holding. It won't compact properly if you try to fill the whole thing and compact from the top. Fill in layers of only a few inches and machine compact each layer.

The liner will definitely be removed. Ill post a better picture when I get home today so you can see the whole thing. I have been told by a company I got a quote from for fill material that we should use topsoil since Colorado is so dry. I have a feeling that is just to get us to pay more since topsoil is so expensive. Hopefully we wont need as much fill as I thought anyway after the liner is taken out. Will probably work on removing that this week and Ill update with pics.

You wouldn't need topsoil but for the upper 12".
