ge vs jenn air appliances

I am redoing my kitchen and have priced out Ge monogram 36” gas range and dishwasher. Ge cafe 36” bottom freezer, French door refrigerator and Ge cafe advantium microwave vs. Jenn air line for everything. I have gone to 2 different appliance stores who have each convinced me that the other one is not good. Online reviews have plenty of bad things to say about all appliances so I tend to not go by those. Any real life experience for these brands? There is about a $2500 price difference in total between the 2 lines. Thank you!

We have a showroom located inside a large appliance store that carries both brands. I always felt the JennAir products looked and felt cheaper - not as well thought out. The GE lines looked and felt better built. You said gas, so this won't matter, but one example is on the JennAir induction cooktop. The glass is wrapped with a small strip of metal to finish off the edge. At the corners, this metal is mitered - and not fit well, leaving a razor sharp edge just waiting to slice someones hand when cleaning up. Surely someone in the process of design and manufacturing could have though that through? I've not seen anything that made me question the GE products. Hope that helps!

Neither for a dishwasher. Miele as my first choice and Bosch as the second. The GE induction slide-in has excellent control scope for the burners. Or the Bosch Benchmark/800 induction range. Sharp for a micro. Or Miele for a Combi steam oven.

GE, but agree - Bosch or Miele dishwasher. Jenn-Aire isn’t popular in my area. In the 80’s it was an aspire brand for the middle class and then the ranges caught on fire. It’s never been a well-designed brand. Save your money and go with GE.

I was between GE and Jenn-Air and ultimately chose Jenn-Air. I’m very happy with everything. The obsidian fridge is amazing and the gas range is very tech savvy, I love it. I got the Sharp micro drawer instead of the Jenn-Air one though.

@pinebaron- how are all the appliances working out for you? What do you love what do you hate? Anything you would do different ? Looking at all the same ones you purchased!!! Thanks!

kim,, appliances were installed only last week and we are still a few days away from moving in and actually trying them out. I have to say they look stunning and exactly like my renderings; all the handle bars are matching, these were upgrades from standard. We need to use these appliances before I can comment on their reliability etc. the only change from my earlier list was a slightly more powerful hood since it was the latest model with controls in front; I installed the hood however after my HVAC guys had to change exhaust vent from 8" to 10". The hood is linked to a heated makeup air unit installed in the mechanical room and makeup air output varies by the hood speed; I installed the sensors and calibrated the makeup air unit, it is a fairly sophisticated setup. DW loves the fact she has three ovens plus a microwave combination oven; you may be aware the warming drawer also doubles up into a slow cooker. On the bar side we have a dual temperature wine cooler (red and white wines) and a beverage center. There is room to add two additional appliances like additional beverage centers but feel we have enough.

I bought the Monogram Advantium. Nice looking, but a waste of money. The interior stainless steel started rusting in less than 1 year.

@pinebarron please let me know what you think after you use them!!! Send pics would love to see in an actual kitchen hahah - I have the same refrigerator already and love it!! We are redoing our kitchen and our cabinet guy brought up changing appliances - we currently have KitchenAid - don’t love them don’t hate them they are just “fine” overall but love the way Jennair looks- just see so many different reviews on them (like with everything though) - I will say saw the same type of reviews on refrigerator (some loved some hated) and we LOVE our refrigerator freezer - love it - not one issue and it looks amazing esp for the price haha

Pinebaron, I am wondering how the Frigidaire Professional refrigerator looks next to the Jenn Air oven, since the Frigidaire has the smudge proof finish... Does it look okay even though the finishes don’t match? (Fingers crossed here!) We will have a similar setup, with refrigerator and double ovens on the same wall. I considered the Electrolux all refrigerator/all freezer so that the stainless would all match, but I have a lot of little kids and I just know that it would be a fingerprint nightmare!

Appliances are in however a few finishing touches are outstanding. Wall oven and refrigerators match perfect since all appliances have upgraded handles and refrigerators's handles look pretty close. Even our bar fridges's handles look very close to Jenn Air. We are presently focusing on occupancy permits and hope to get a temp permit soon; hopefully I'll commence moving stuff in this weekend even though there is work outstanding, we can't wait much longer. It would be perfect if we can celebrate Thanksgiving in the new house. Still need to finish installing trim around ovens and refrigerators and also when refrigerators are properly recessed; need to relocate outlets behind to the bottom, electrician messed up when I was not paying attention.

Can I ask if you are still happy with the Appliances?

Hello. I’m not sure if you are addressing me but I’m happy to report! I ended up changing mostly everything. In the end I went with what I thought was the highest value for my dollar. We bought the 36” gas wolf range. GE cafe fridge. Miele dishwasher (bought floor model when they brought in the new line). Miele speed oven and Miele dishwasher. I absolutely love everything. The dishwasher is really quite, holds a ton of dishes and has a quick wash cycle that is less than and hour. We use the speed oven a lot since it holds a regular sized baking sheet so we can make most dinners in it.

It’s all so confusing to me on appliances. We are remodeling our kitchen and I am told Jenn Air by an appliance store but currently have GE - monogram, profile, and regular and they are all fine besides the refrigerator.

@Susan Farinas: Absolutely love them; flawless so far. What you don't see is in the pic is additional appliances in the family room bar area; JennAir undecounter IceMaker, Danby Silhouette 24in Wine Cellar 51-Bottle Capacity and Danby 24" Built In Beverage Center.

We moved in end of November 2018 and celebrated ThanksGiving with the family. We love the home especially the kitchen.

Susan, manufacturers periodically give bonuses to sales people. Take any heavy push toward one brand or another with a grain of salt. The store/salespeople don't really care about you, or objective information. Just your money.

This is all so helpful. I didn’t realize sales people get incentives.
I’d love to see beverage center/bar area pics. We are going to wrap our kitchen around a corner to create a bar area.

I love my Jenn Air appliances, they’ve been in a year now. Still beautiful and still in perfect working order. See my kitchen renovation pictures in my idea books if you’d like!

Per Consumer Reports surveys, Jenn-Air appliances are among the least reliable (see CR chart).

@Susan: We just ordered glass shelves for the 14 1/2‘ long bar which will be installed in the next couple of weeks; notice we did not create space for bar stools since it’s in the family room section and also since we have a traditional bar in the media room (aka man cave to be completed) on the second floor, the other end of the home. The pantry is on the other side of bar wall. The first two pics are day and night pics and last one is a rendering when complete.

We will eventually install a kegerator and beer tap to the right of bar sink.

Ive had JennAir wall ovens and cook-top for seven years now and have had nothing but problems with both from the beginning. I thought they were higher end and therfore better quality. It is December 22 and my ovens once again just stopped working. I will never buy Jenn Aire again.

Jenn-Air dates to 1947. The company initially produced industrial ventilation fans.

    Maytag acquired Jenn-Air in 1982.

Whirlpool bought Maytag in 2006, including Jenn-Air and other brands in Maytag's portfolio. The hypen was eliminated in 2018, thus the current brand-name being JennAir.
