newhostalady..I agree with you that poaky1's hosta does not look like a Sum and Substance..gardencool said mine is dark leaved and not a Sum and Substance but I don't think so!!..poaky1 thinks mine is a Sum and Substance but a lighter color because it's not growing in as much shade..this is how I understood Claudia's post..was hard to follow..your opinion please..a Sum and Substance?..or if not then what?..

out of the thousands of hosta.. which i am familiar with .. i can only think of 3 that have white flowers .... plantiginea .... being the prime one ...

ergo.. anyone who claims a plant has white flowers.... is of questionable knowledge .... but what the heck do i know ...

many actually have purple in them ... and by the end of the first day.. the purple fades out ... if you see one that is white .. grab the next not yet open bud.. and peel it open.. bet a shiny penny.. you will see purple in there ....

now where is this poaky post??? .. maybe i should go look for a claudia post ... bbl ....

Nicholsworth, your hosta does look like S&S---the color and shape of the leaves look right.

Good point about the flowers Ken. Those pictures are definitely S&S! Where did they come from?

(Personally I think the Hosta Library should correct the description of S&S's flowers. Too confusing!

S&S is one of the most readily identifiable hostas out there, even to a novice like me. First off - it is a giant hosta, 2nd - it is limey apple green, 3rd - the giant leaves are rather roundish, 4th - the flowers are NOT white. I can go into a hosta garden without being positive of a single hosta ID except for the S&S - there is no doubt about that one! I could go take a photo of mine and post it here but my S&S looks like a standard S&S, so I won't.

But I'm not the hosta police. Poaky1 can call her hosta whatever she wants.

Most of us are here to learn more about our hosta passion. It could be of help to Poaky1 to let her know what she is calling a S&S may not be a S&S. I am not good IDing solid dark green leafed hostas so I can not help her in IDing what her large/giant hosta might be. You - 5centworth - have a large dark green one next to your S&S - what is that?

gardencool..I wouldn't mind it if someone corrected a mistaken ID..how else will we learn?..I'm pretty sure that big dark one is a Blue Angel..in person you can see a hint of blue..there's one on the opposite side of that wide path growing in more shade that looks more blue..in several spots I've planted matching hostas flanking a path..I think I did that here..
