Wet Enough For Ya?

As of today my area is just 3" short of a full years average rainfall with over 5 months to go. My squash, cuke, and cantaloupe plants are rotting away. The squash and cukes were past their peak so no big loss on that front but there's at least a dozen large green loupes out there with little chance to ripen properly as the vines die back from drowning. The week ahead doesn't look to sunny either, wish we could send this extra moisture out west where gardens and homes are on fire.

I've measured 6 inches (15cm) in just one week and stopped counting. But my garden is still lush because they are raised beds and drain well. My container plants are starting to complain though. But I'm enjoying not having to water anything!!

I'm having a thrilling time driving around to see raging streams and waterfalls in the Catskills here. Reservoirs are full when they are usually almost empty by now. The planet is changing.

It used to be rare for me to have my corn flop over flat during summer storms, but lately I have to reset the stalks at least 3 times each season due to too much heavy rain and strong winds. My corn planting habits are adjusting to smaller plots.

6 inches in one week??!! We don't even receive that much rainfall on average in a full month in the wettest season (January/February)!! And it is pretty much bone dry here in summer - 6/10th's of a inch would be a huge summer rain event here!!

It’s been wet here, too much recently. However, it’s interesting to compare the large variations over very short distance. I live less than 15 miles as the crow flies from BWI airport (Baltimore.)

BWI is already over 40” for the year and over 15” for the month. We are at maybe 7.5” for the month and 27” for the year...still well above normal but nothing like just fifteen miles away.

Funny how that works. Bone dry around here. Really could use a little rain. We had the first significant rainfall since mid May 2 weeks ago, but none since. Funny how my garden is suffering from a lack of rain and yours from two much....just a couple states over!! Temperatures have been very pleasant though.

It has REALLY been a rough year for gardening. We had a cold, late spring that turned directly into summer in May with a drought.

What is so odd is that even the trees are changing already. Some of the ornamental trees in town are almost completely changed to their fall colors and most of the natives are brightening up and showing signs of changing like they do in Sept.!! And on top of that all of the nuts are falling off (like walnuts). Sooooo weird. What's next? I'm betting for a frost by the end of the month to top it all off ;-)

Been dry here too. Had some storms pass through a few days ago but they didn't help at all. Most of Michigan is in a moderate drought or on the border of it...

Next week doesn't look good for the east coast with more rainy conditions expected. Good thing no hurricanes are forming now, big trees would easily topple over in this mushy soil from Ga to NE.

Looks as if half the country is getting excessive rain - the other half is "On Fire". Mother Nature is upset about something.

It was getting a bit dry and then I got 2.8 inches last weekend...just right. More is headed my way again.

It hasn't been overly dry here, but far less rain & more sun than last year... for which I'm grateful. Lots of rainfall elsewhere in Wisconsin (some to the point of flood warnings) but the biggest storms have either gone around us, or broken up just West of here. Which historically, makes this about a normal year here in terms of rainfall.

The temps have been above normal, though; which combined with all those sunny days, has the garden far more advanced than it would usually be at this point. Have been harvesting eggplant & okra for 2 weeks now, usually that wouldn't start until August.

Everything planted is doing well... wish I'd been able to plant the whole garden this year. Foot surgery at the end of May prevented me from working my rural garden, where I plant the space hogs. No corn or winter squash this year. :-(

No, not wet enough here in the plains. We did get about 1/4" yesterday morning which meant I didn't have to water my newly sown carrots, squash, and beans for a day or 2. We've only had about 8" since late May and half of that was in one day.
