Burlap for basket liner?

Thinking ahead to next season.

I have a small rectangular wire basket on my balcony. A standard coco fiber liner is too large. This season, I had a few small pieces of coco fiber on hand which I laid in the bottom of the basket then overlaid with a piece cut from an old plastic shower liner. (I used the pieces of fiber liner I had with the thought it might provide support/resistance to the plastic liner bulging through the bottom of the wire basket.)

The local Menard's, I noticed, has large burlap bags for $2 which is far cheaper than the same amount of coco fiber would be. So I'm considering picking one up and using it in place of the coco fiber pieces I'm using this season. So has anyone given that a try? Pro's and cons?

Considering how cheap a large burlap bag is, lasting for one year is fine! I only have the one basket planter and one large bag will provide enough liner material for such a basket for a number of years! Looks like I'll be giving this a try. Thanks folks!

Haven't tried it myself, but I have seen burlap liners and others who use them. You can also use landscape fabric. You may consider doubling it.

Next year, I plan to use either landscape fabric, burlap or green moss liners (if I can find them). I have decided I just do not care for the way the coco liners look especially over time.

It would probably work well short term, but I don't think it would last more than one season. I did the grocery tote thing when my neighbor gave me a couple plants, and I didn't want to go out and get another pot, so I used a permeable (if you can blow through it) grocery store tote. It worked well, but it looked hideous!

Yes, untreated burlap will begin to disintegrate and decompose by the end of a single growing season. But will work perfectly well for this purpose during that time frame :-)

Is the ''burlap'' really burlap or some synthetic imitation? Many synthetics have a long life.
