A finish and more FMQ

This is a finish from a few weeks ago. It's a pattern from a QAL hosted by Sandra on mmmquilts.com.

The pattern is Plus Play time.

I went a bit over board with the free motion quilting. I use a BlockRockit 15. It has a 15" throat but in practice just over 11" of comfortable quilting space. I wanted to try some continuous motifs - designs that continue as you roll up the quilt. I used a ruler to outline and echo the pluses.

I tried a chain of swirls which came out quite well.

I tried a kind of large feather - which didn't turn out as I wanted. I used some swirls to fill out the remaining area and also just some wavy lines at the bottom.

WOW! That is beautiful - the quilting is wonderful! Sorry it didn't turn out the way you wanted, but it is still stunning!

Was that done on your own machine or a rental? It looks like you've been doing free motion quilting for a long time. You really did a beautiful job.

Exquisite is the word that came to me too Vasu, I see it's already been used. Just stunning, that middle pic, the closer up - breathtaking!!!! Btwn your quilting & the varied print patterns & resultant textures, I swoon.

My FMQ journey is a recent one. I've been quilting for almost 15 years but started FMQ just a couple of years ago. I fell in love with it. I still love designing and piecing but FMQ is so Zen-like. I hold this forum responsible for it. Someone posted a link to Leah Day's videos and then there was no turning back!

Last year was a milestone birthday for me and I splurged on the BlockRockit. It is the same machine as Grace Q'nique but marketed by Kathy and Lynn Barlow of KathyQuilts.com. I believe they are the original designers and Grace does the manufacturing. I tried out a number of machines at the Houston Quilt festival and decided on BlockRockit primarily because I found Kathy and Lynn very helpful and nice to talk to. It is probably the cheapest mid/long arm machine and fit my purpose. Also checkout Leah Day's video reviews of the Grace Q'nique for more info. Handiquilter 16 is a comparable machine.

My original plan was to buy a Grace Q'nique and shop for a used frame on Craigslist but I ended up buying a new 8 ft frame as well.

Working with tension and bobbins, etc was quite easy but stand-up FMQ is quite different from sit down. I felt I had to relearn all the hand movements and control allover again.
