What room is above the front door? Would it be possible to add a window there. That would open up that blank space. I would also paint the trim a lighter color, even white and paint the trim around the 2nd story window the same color. An, as ninigret suggested a bright color on the door to draw the eye and make it a focal point and then some landscaping.
