Log cabin finished

This is another top made by my mom. She wasn't able to handle large quilt tops for several years before she passed away two years ago, so I estimate this top was finished 8 - 10 years ago. I assembled backing and cut batting back in Jan. or Feb., then for some reason put it away again. When DH's family drew names for Christmas, I got his older sister's name. Sister J was very fond of my mom so I decided to quilt it and it will go to her for Christmas. It's 80 X 92 and is the largest quilt I've quilted in a long time! I did a meandering stitch all over.

I did some dumb things so it was a challenge to quilt. First, I made backing that is dark green with a strip of light tan on one side. I think I was just trying to use fabric I had on hand. I decided to use dark green thread in the bobbin since most of the back is dark green, but the quilting really stands out in the light section. (Not really a bad thing, just not subtle LOL.)

I also made a perpendicular seam when I sewed that tan strip to the backing, so that caused quilting challenges.

And evidently I loaded the batting sideways because I was fighting with it the whole time to make sure it stayed straight since I only had about 1/2" extra on the sides. But, I have a nice big piece left over for the next quilt!

Wonderful log cabin, Donna. And believe me, no-one is going to notice what you perceive to be "dumb".

Well done! Challenges and all. I do like Log Cabins, I think it might be time for another.

What a good idea to give your mom's quilt to your sister-in-law. I'm sure she will treasure it. I love log cabins. I think yours turned out great.

The quilt looks beautiful. Do you have memories of any of the fabrics? I usually don't remember to consider the backing and the quilting thread until it is too late. Case in point, the current quilt. LOL

Donna, I think you're doing a very special thing and Sister J is going to have tears in her eyes. It looks fine to me......and a treasure for sure.

That's a beauty. I've never made a scrappy log cabin. Must try it some time. It's such a nice tribute to your mother

Thanks, everyone! Bev, I didn't have any memories of the fabrics (they would be pretty old scraps if leftover from my childhood clothes! LOL), but I did notice quite a few that I either have exactly the same or the same print in a different color way. We had very similar taste in colors and styles.

Before she stopped driving she was always going to yard sales and buying more fabric. :) I found a lot of things in her sewing stuff that I know she would never have bought, so I assumed they must have been included in boxes or bags of fabric she got at yard sales.

Fran, she was all about using what she had. She would never have gone to a store and bought yardage for the purpose of cutting it up and making a quilt. I don't think there's a solid fabric in there anywhere. But she obviously had a great sense of value - the lights and darks really contrast nicely. Value is something I often struggle with.

Oh Donna, this log cabin is beautiful, what a super special gift for your SIL!

I've yet to make a log cabin except as a lotto block....need to add to the project list.
