It does seem like you need better lighting; perhaps that is something you should look at before making any changes to your counters. Having said that, here are some kitchens with similarly coloured cabinets and light counters/backsplashes...

I agree with above posters. Also please remove the window curtain.

Can you take a photo that shows the whole kitchen? I think before doing anything you should sort out an improved lighting plan.

The floppy thing on the window needs to go. Paint the window frame to match the wall (to create a break in the wood colour).

I would add under cabinet lighting first & then look into a new backsplash & counter top. It’ll change the way the whole kitchen looks on its own.

Develop a budget....what you can afford to pay for within 30 days or at credit card payment due date. Do not go into debt because it can be a bottomless pit.
Can you add a better central light fixture?
Yes, remove the short backsplash and replace it with simple solid tile which exactly matches one of the lighter colors in your counters (your original counters or new ones within your budget).
You could also add wallpaper as a backsplash....even temporarily.
Your kitchen looks pretty good as it is...lucky you.

We agree, you seem to need better lighting. However, we think this countertop and backsplash would look amazing in your kitchen.

We recommend adding some cabinet lights, add backsplash, and pick lighter colored countertop and also repaint/replace the cabinets (if your budget permits)- something similar to this image below.
