Window Treatment Help Please- open concept, shades or drapes?

Hi All! Hoping you could provide some assistance with window treatments for my new home. It's an open concept kitchen/family room. (photos attached). Should I do:

1. Roman shades on all the windows and leave the slider bare

2. Roman shades on all windows with drapery panels on the slider

3. Roman shades on the kitchen windows and narrow living room windows, drapery on the slider and the windows on either side of fireplace

Another question I have is- do you think that the shades in the kitchen and family room need to match? I really love the oasis linen shade for my kitchen windows, but not sure I want to do that throughout the whole family room as well. That said, can anyone recommend a coordinating fabric? The finishes in my kitchen are definitely more gray, and once all my furniture comes in for the family room, those are more natural/oatmeal colors. The only thing staying in the family room is the rug. The fireplace has some gray in it, but mostly pulls tan/beige.

Hi, Katie--

I don't necessarily see a Roman shade as an ideal option for either of these spaces. For me, I'd do these windows in a cordless white wood blind treatment with an inside mount. In the style I use most often (https://www.lowes.com/pd/LEVOLOR-2-in-Cordless-White-Faux-Wood-Blinds-Common-35-in-Actual-34-5-in-x-72-in/50260811), an external header is included that would help act as a headrail on your windows that lack full trim but do have traditional muntins and sills. This touch should help lend a little additional architectural character to your existing shaker cabinets and millwork throughout both spaces. Unfortunately it doesn't really look like there's adequate room to either side of your fireplace flanking windows for drapery panels to stack off, but, if so, that would be an excellent addition to the space where you could use your oasis linen fabric to create emphasis and add a bit of softness in an additional layer for depth.

For a time, I'd try to live with the slider undraped, as it looks like the only place to stack off drapery there would be to the left of the opening, where you now have several wall switches and is also pet feeding central. :) If privacy there isn't an issue, you may be able to get away with it uncovered and not allow intruding glare into the main TV viewing area, too. It's worth a shot. Cheers!

I too would leave the slider naked--it is beautiful as is. Do you want/feel the need for color, design infused into your space? I am not a fan of shades. While they are very utilitarian they leave the room with a casual, empty vibe. Roman shades for kitchen windows-when needed work well. I think you have an opportunity with drapes to add some warmth and personality into your home.

You have nice deep "casings" for an inside mount treatment. Much depends on the privacy desired, I am NOT a fan of dust catching blinds, which will never look good when yanked up to allow more view or light. The stack is not a pretty thing at all.

If you want texture, and a blurring of view or light? A woven wood roman shade ( Hunter Douglas Provenance) is great. If you want an always translucent view with flexibility in light control? A Hunter Douglas "Silhouette" is lovely. Either look great with curtain panels over them, if you want that as well.

Point is UNITY. Pick one treatment for privacy and light, carry it through everywhere. Add stationary curtain panels if you like, but beware conflicting/ busy patterns in a large view of open space. Skip the blinds. Please : )

Gorgeous space! You have a nice view, I assume you need to cover the windows only at night for privacy? I would think about some roman shades.

Thank you all so much for the helpful advice!! Yes, just to clarify, I love our view and all the light. The treatments are really for privacy in the evenings and to add a little softness. I was thinking leaning towards a very neutral roman shade in a linen type fabric, potentially with a small scale embroidery pattern. However, someone advised me that since the 4 windows in the family room were different heights (the narrow windows are taller), I should do shades on the narrow windows and matching drapery on either side of the fireplace. By hanging the drapery rod in line with the narrow windows, it would create a cohesive look. That got me second guessing everything! :)

I agree that your space and windows are beautiful! I like the idea of roman shades on all your windows and there is a Vertiglide from Hunter Douglas that I would suggest for your slider. They come in many fabrics and colors. Take colors from your area rug for your roman shades and coordinate with what you would pick for the Vertiglide.
