Kitchen remodel--keep island the same or change is

What would you do with this kitchen? Would you turn it white? What would you do with the island? Leave the shape and height as is or lower it. I like the height because it keeps it looking neat but wondering if that seems outdated :). See pictures below..no option on phone to add pictures here

I don’t think I’d like the angled island because the dishwasher opens towards the sink. Do you currently live there and are you okay with the way it functions? If it works for you then leave it. If you’re planning some changes, then maybe lighten up the counter material rather than paint the cabinets. They look like they’re in good shape. I had a higher counter in my old house and we never used it to sit there to eat and now that we have a level counter, we eat there everyday. I love having the larger workspace too when I’m prepping or baking.

Why do you want to change it? Are you just wanting a more updated look? Better functionality? Are you planning on selling? Our old house was similar to your set up. I found it awkward to load the dishwasher. And felt a bit squished. But overall it worked and the bar did block any mess. Now we have a huge one height counter island with sink/dishwasher. It is more comfortable. I did a large deep single bowl sink which hides any dishes in between loads.

Having had a raised bar like that, I can say it was useless, too narrow to eat at or read a paper, or for anything else. I love my counter without it. I can see everything in the family room and I have tons of space. People actually use the counter stools now. Yes, the raised bar hides mess and clutter, so if having to keep it clear will bother you, then keep it.

I am just starting to think about what would be ideal. I am honestly feel fine with the current configuration except I would like more pantry space (which I might add under our stairs). I guess I could use a bit more prep space which I guess lowering the island might do. I typically use the island when guest visit for a buffet style serving area. The kids sometimes do homework or eat there. Sounds like a few of you think lowering it would be nice. Would you change the shape? If so, how? Not sure where else the dishwasher could really go. I do have and love our undivided large sink. As for the cabinets, sounds like you all think leaving it dark is okay?? Always imagined a white kitchen but I guess the rest of the room is very light (maybe it gives it some balance). I thought about maybe changing the back-splash. We are hoping to live here for a long time. My built in microwave/oven combo just went out so I wanted to brainstorm big before I pulled the trigger on a new combo set. Just thinking about updating. Thanks for all of your feedback so far. I really appreciate it!!!
