Skip the wood valance between cabinets in the kitchen. It's a very dated look, and will make your kitchen darker by covering some of the light coming in through the window.

Are you talking about a fabric valance - or a wood valance. I think you are talking about fabric, in which case, would like to see a picture.

Just skip the valance. It will date your kitchen regardless.

I have a faux roman shade valance and I like the color it adds to the kitchen. Tie up curtains which function as a valance are also popular.

A picture will help. Are you considering a tension rod between the cabinets?

We’re doing horizontal blinds with a fabric valance to cover the horizontals. Obviously I haven’t gotten the tile up the left side yet, but it will be. Dimensions are stated in original post. Wife says she thinks fabroc valance should span the cabinets. I think 4.5” outside the window on each side would look awkward and thinknit should be about 2” each side. Looking for the “pro’s” opinion on proper amount of extension beyond the window.

Ok, I think different people are talking about different things. A valence is a short drapery panel that only sits at the top of the window. It is installed with either a curtain or drapery rod or stapled to a back board, and is usually paired with blinds but can be hung alone. What Angel and Justin have pictured are blinds which can be raised and lowered, not valences.

I think that the window that Justin shows is not the right dimensions to support a valence and the blind he mentioned. It'll look odd with that window. Justin, IMO you should just hang the blind and skip the valence. A valence won't add anything and will decrease the natural light into your kitchen. I wasn't certain what you meant by "horizontal blinds" - a slatted blind? Perhaps a fabric blind would be softer. And sufficient.

Yes, a slatted blind is the actual window covering we are using. That can be raised and lowered. The window faces west, so the afternoon and evening hours can be blinding while at the sink. The wife wants a valance to cover the top of the blind and she likes the faux Roman shade valance style. I’ve lost the battle of valance or no valance, so I just need the professional opinion of how far outside the edges of the window to mount the valance for coverage. cabinet to cabinet, or a certain nominal dimension outside the window?

I have a roller blind over my kitchen sink. Not one of the older type, but the newer ones that are a lot nicer. We get that same sun later in the day, so most of the time it's up. This is an inside mount. You could do this instead of the blinds, less cleaning to do.

Do you have a picture of what kind of valance your wife would like.

May I suggest you remove the wood (I think it's wood) at the top of the tiling and replace with specially made tile trim for that job.

My faux roman shade is on a curtain rod which is mounted on the window frame. I do not have the amount of space on each side of the window as you do and I am limited hight wise by a soffit. My shade should be a tad higher - but I did not want to get out my drill and put more holes into my window frame for an inch:)

Your answer is- the returns (sides diving back into the wall) should be immediately outside the width of the window (or its trim if there is trim.) If you inspect your example picture you showed above, you will see the same thing. Your cabinets do not factor into this decision.

Angel 18432 love the picture with shade that you can see thru. Very clean. Adding a valance over it to hind the actual shade is a good option, but looking at your picture I don't think it is necessary. Nice job and thanks for idea.
