What kind of advice are you looking for?

Just interested in what folks would do to makeover the fireplace

Get an experienced tile installer to make a fireproof box around the existing one. This creates a new fireplace wall to prep for any type of tile/rock look you want, all without removing the old. Yes it will bring the fireplace out into the room more but that the trade off. Can’t suggested what style or colours as you need to post a present day picture

Thanks for info. In my area, those rock fireplaces are often replaced with much smaller fireplace surrounds and the rest of the wall covered with wallboard to make it smooth. The usual choice is a very simple classic tile surround with a painted mantle. What you can do with the wood burning depends on local building safety codes, so you may want to check on that if you are thinking of a contemporary glass insert, for example.

Thanks for the reply. It's actually a wood burning fireplace that has been converted to gas. I was thinking something like this. Would it just be a matter of removing the faux stone, tiling around the fireplace (and the floor where the hearth is, I guess), and building the surround? What would be other considerations?

Here is some idea

The replacement idea photo is beautiful. Nice proportions. Estimates from local pros will tell you what's involved. Definitely get the electrical outlet, best hidden at mantle level.

Anyone know what is likely behind the faux stone? Just drywall?
