A month or so ago, our neighbor's dog (Frank, a 3-year old Bernese Mountain Dog) became a little sick while she was out of town, her daughter who was pet sitting took him to the vet, and was given a similar dire pronouncement. She decided to take Frank home, but the next morning Frank was very much worse, and it was clear that although he only seemed a little sick the day before, it would have saved him a lot of suffering to have gone with the vet's recommendation then.

Then later that same week, our neighbor's 50-year old mini donkey was found down in the pasture, and passed away before the vet could even get there.

Very sorry for you loss. RIP Charlie.

I'm so sorry, Summer. It's always heartbreaking to lose a pet, but it hits especially hard when they are so young and were expected to have a good long life ahead of them. Your Charlie was a beautiful boy.

Tony the Tiger was sick a couple of weeks ago, For two days, vomiting all over the house. And sleep? I was anxious. He came out of it, but we don't know what it was. I shudder to think that we would have to again go through that.

Without trying to be nosy (I know I am anyway), what did they find?

I so sorry. He was so young and very handsome. My Charley looks a lot like him, but with green eyes. We lost a cat to congestive heart failure. She was 10, but all my other cats had lived to 17 or 18. We took her to the vet because she had a small cough. I thought she just had a cold.

Yes, Charlie had different colored eyes. He weighed 20 lbs and had a huge personality and a gentle demeanor to match. He impressed everyone he met with his disposition including the vets and techs. He had never been ill or showed any signs other than when I first adopted him with a stomach issue, despite feeding him the food he was accustomed to, which was resolved by a specific food and a daily spoonful of pumpkin which he loved.

In the morning, I heard Charlie make that hacking sound that cats make, (though this was rare). When I went to him, he had blood on his face. I cleaned him up, while he purred, to see where the blood had come from and nothing was obvious. I immediately called my vet and was able to get in. He was puzzled as Charlie appeared very healthy with good vitals, good color with only a slight elevation in temperature. He thought possibly it was an irritation from something as simple as an embedded hair that caused an infection and antibiotics would clear it up. Since he was closing at noon, I decided to take Charlie to the Emergency Clinic for further tests to determine the source of the blood. My worst fear was that he had swallowed something, though that wasn’t usual, and would require surgery.

There, again, after examining him, it was felt it was something minor that antibiotics would clear up. Tests were performed while he was under anesthetic. I waited there the whole day expecting I would be bringing him home.

Then, I heard the word, cancer. Things got a bit blurry from then on. Aggressive, fast growing, non operable, painful, cancer in the throat…..would need a feeding tube…..could take him to a specialist in another city but it was hopeless. Hopeless is how I felt. All the money in the world couldn’t help my Charlie. Shocking is an understatement……even the vet and techs were shocked. Three years old and not the tiniest hint of anything amiss in his behavior, habits or functions.

Losing a pet has always been extremely painful for me, but the fact that they have been older and had a loving home was a bit consoling. Charlie was so young and had such a presence. I miss him like crazy.

So sad. I was once told, while losing an elderly cat to lymphoma, that cancer was rare in cats but I am not finding that to be true. Three years old. That is heart breaking. He was such a beautiful cat. But aren't they all.

Charlie needed you (and you him, I’m sure) for however little time he had here on this earth. I hope you’ll take some solace in knowing that you gave him the very best life possible, filled with warmth, and safety, and above all, love.

cancer is such an insidious disease and often sneaks up so unexpectedly, as in charlie's case. i have lost 2 dogs to cancer and both times, the diagnosis was shocking and totally unexpected. most, if not all of us here, have been through the loss of a beloved pet or in many cases, multiple pets and we can all relate to your sorrow.

i agree with cat_mom. while it isn't much consolation yet, i hope you will realize soon how wonderful charlie's life was with you. it's obvious in your posts that you loved him very much and i'm sure the feeling was mutual! <3

Good looking dude. My condolences. There's not much I can say to console you, but I went through this a few years ago. KC was running and playing one day and a day or two later was unable to breathe outside of an oxygen tent. I understand the shock when things are so unexpected. Try to remember the good times and the funny things to help with the hurt.
