My first Jade tree! Tips?

I picked this up today from the Lyman Greenhouse in Waltham. It is a cutting from Walter Gropiuis Jade plant! Very cool bit of hsiotry here.

The plant has nice structure and is healthy, as you can see.

I've never owned a Jade before, any tips?

It is very very top heavy and this tapered pot tips easy. Can I repot now into something with a more stable base?

Pls. allow some time for folks to answer, like a day or two.

I don't grow Jades so I can't counsel you. I see you started another thread abt this asking abt 5-1-1. Pls stay on one thread for the same plant, just add to it, or it gets too confusing.

Have you ever grown Jades before? Have you ever used 5-1-1 before? I sense no for either. If so I wouldn't start w/ this one, you could kill a nice plant in ignorance. I'd leave it alone & place the whole thing in a heavier, more stable pot. I don't think that plant needs anything but time to adjust, I would NOT repot it.

Karen - first Jade, this will be roughly my 20th medium sized houseplant.

Yes, I am growing half of my collection in 5-1-1 as we speak and further fine tuned my mix recently.

It needs to go into a new pot before it tips over, again.

A seperatw thread was necessary as I can't change the title to this one..... Maybe I can delete this one though!

It's OK, no need to change the title it's your thread, pls. just continue to add to it as needed. I don't mean to dissuade you, it's just that's a very nice, older Jade, maybe practice on something else first.

Again, I'd just re-seat the whole pot as is into something heavier & just read for a while. Respectfully, I don't see the hurry to disturb this lovely plant.

We have some very experienced Jade growers here, pls allow a day or 2 for folks to respond, They will.

I would repot in the spring. Your pot needs to be wider and could be a little deeper. I prefer terra-cotta for succulents, especially larger heavier ones like this.

For now, you could sit the smaller pot in a bigger pot, to make it more stable. I have trouble with top-heavy plants too, I'm so clumsy.

Trouble is.... I don't have anything available other than thin plastic pots.

I know the oercect Terra cotta pot I will put this in, wide and stable. The current pot won't fit in that pot though....

Take your thin plastic pot, get some rocks for it & sit the plant inside that or on top of that w/ a couple more rocks in the Jade pot to keep it stable. I'd go easy on water too, that mix looks rather water retentive from here.

    Perhaps.

Yeah, this is not my favorite mix. Another reason I want to switch it into a 511 mix this late spring.

FYI - There are many threads about jades on Cacti & Succulents forum -HERE-.

I would repot plant into more 'squat' pot, plastic or terracotta. I have bigger one in glazed ceramic pot that is quite wide at the bottom. JMO, but I would plan on pruning that big lower branch off, and pot it separately to get new plant. Original would look very good with thicker trunk, and be also more balanced. As I said, JMO...

I grow them in a mix of grit and perlite (approx. same amounts), with just a bit of turface (not much, maybe 10% or so of total mix). But 5.1.1 is pretty good mix - reason I don't use it is difficulty to find small bark. Most of my plants are in plastic pots - and I use bigger rocks for weight as Karen suggested, but many prefer terracotta or ceramic. They are def more stable, as long as the base is wider.

    Thanks!!!

    Can I safely repot now?

The greenhouse said the same thing about that lower branch. Do I stick the cut branch in potting soil and it will take off?

I want it to look more like a tree, less like a plant.

    Good info on the 511!
