Kitchen Island advice

We are currently planning a renovation to in our kitchen. This includes new, lighter countertops, new SS appliances and extending the island and making it one level. We are planning on keeping the cabinetry that is not part of the island as-is.

We have not yet settled on the appearance of the island and would love some thoughts! Cabinetry a different color? If so, what color? I can’t figure out one that would look good with everything else. My husband likes the idea of keeping the cabinets the same color as the rest but putting a stone facing by where the stools would go, but I am thinking it may look too rustic.

ignore the colors or the style, they're just for visuals. You can keep your natural wood.

If you want a two tone, you could do a nice sage, a warm charcoal, navy, or even a cream. all would look nice w/the wood.

what island? you mean your peninsula? (one free floats and the other comes off a wall or another bank of cabinets)

making it one level will look better. here are some ideas

btw, if you can swing it loose and move it inward, you could have an island

Oops, yes a peninsula. Thanks for the ideas! We have thought about separating it, but then we have a free standing column and not sure about that. That’s a whole other discussion! :)

I see some of your pics are white. I am a little nervous about doing a white when the rest of the colors are warm... think that would go ok?

Your peninsula would look good in a white finish. (White and wood tones have a very crisp classic look) You can add open and closed storage, a decorative detail on the exposed end. Your husband I think is talking about doing, what is called a waterfall edge. Depending on what type and colour of countertop you pick can looks very nice. Just expensive- take a look on here under waterfall countertop.

white would may be too bright. It may be too much to a focal point. Creme may be better.

Navy, charcoal, sage or espresso or keep same as other cabinets.

Thanks for the pics. That helps me visualize a lot better and now starting to lean toward keeping the wood color.

If you are considering moving the island, I do like mine within reach of the sink and range. My kitchen is a bit small and the island would be better if it was a little farther from the range. 42" is a good distance.

When I am cooking alone, which is most of the time, space is not an issue. When husband and dogs decide to hang out by the sink when I am getting last minute things done, the space is tight and they are in the way:)

My island is the same stain as the cabinets because I just happened to find one that matched. Otherwise I might have looked at a blue because that is my favorite accent color.

I think, with incoming SS appliances and a light stone countertop on the way, a white peninsula that aligns to a white tone already in your palette (whether ceiling, trim, or elsewhere from your paint plot) wouldn't look out of place. Especially since it looks like the lower part of your existing knee wall that adjoins it is currently a white--I'd use that! I agree with the idea that leveling your peninsula top to one level will help it look more cohesive with the rest of the space, too. No to facing it with stacked stone, which would be a nightmare to keep clean and dust-free in a cooking space. You'll get the texture and motion from your countertop to add that interest to the space while keeping it easy to clean.

I suspect your husband is NOT talking about a waterfall edge since you do not mention counters and might be loving on stacked stone to face it, is that correct? If so, just say NO over and over!

I would do the same color throughout in this situation. If you ever decide to change your mind you can paint it, but not the other way around.
