Lighting above structural beam in basement kitchen

I have a structural beam we added to open up our kitchen area in the basement. I would like pendants above the counter but the beam is place where the pendants should go. Do I have any options in placement? Would it look strange to put pendants in front of the beam and possible extend the counter a few extra inches which would center them?

If it's an industrial look kitchen, exposed conduits will be appropriate.

When you clad the beam you can build out the cladding just enough so the wiring and device boxes can be installed on the underside of the beam. They have shallow depth and what are called pancake device boxes that are very shallow so you would not have to build out your covering by much. You could then mount your light fixtures directly to the underside of the beam.
