Help Decorating

We built a wall unit and now need ideas for how to decorate above and on it.
The unit fits in an 10’ space of our family room. We finished off the top with African Mohagony. We have 8’ ceilings.

Any ideas for art, wall design and/or pieces to put on-top of the cabinet would be appreciated.

Very pretty. What's your style? Looks like it might be modern but not sure. Are you going to keep the family photos on the cabinet? Can you post some pics of the rest of the room?

I would say our style is more transitional, in that we like clean lines yet natural products of wood and stone. I would like to find a spot for the photos but have been reluctant to hang them yet as I’m not sure of the exact place I should put them(maybe another room entirely).
The room is quite large about 15x30 feet, with a fireplace on the opposite wall and two door entrances to an office and mudroom behind the couch that faces our tv and sliding doors.
This is definitely our comfy family room where we spend a lot of time.
I did find some paned mirrors at ‘Urban Barn’ and wonder if they would suit the space above the cabinet but I wonder if we should have 1 or 2 of them.(I’ve added a picture from the store). The ceilings in the room are 8 feet so anything to make the room appear taller would be preferred. I know the wall between the doorways should have something more large and was thinking of a large clock. Any Suggestions?

I have thought of open shelves, it’s a 10’ wall, do you think they should be straight across or break the wall up into thirds with shelves on the ends?

@Lil S, good idea about shelves. You could mix it up like this, shelves partially across and art on the wall too:

W Dallas Penthouse · More Info

Or something like this and maybe you put an art piece or your mirror in the middle

Transitional Living Room · More Info

Buy floating shelves rather than built ins and then you can mix it up.

I would put a lot of the family photos on that wall that is behind the sofa. Make a grouping so people can stop and review them in detail. A good tip: small photos or small art should be in a space for close inspection. Large art is viewed from a distance.

Thanks Tozmo1 and Lil S, I do like the idea for the floating shelves and may look up some more examples. They would also serve well for displaying photos.
