Standby Generator Cool Beans

Well, I was showing a new resident of our neighborhood some of the stuff in my house to include the generator and when I opened the cabinet I came to the realization that it was deader than a doornail. The thing has a sonalert to beep away when it needs attention but it is so far away from the beaten path in my house I don't hear it (my neighbor used to let me know if she heard it while walking her dog).

So, I decided I needed something better. After getting a new car battery for the generator (the old one was the original 12 year old one), I started hunting on the internet for some wifi capapble monitor. Low and behold someone cracked the interface to the thing and built a Raspberry Pi based generator monitor. Under $100 worth of parts (Raspberry Pi, RS-232 level shifter, 12V-to_USB power, and a weatherproof box) and I now have my generator up and running. I can see if the weekly exercise failed, etc...

While I was at it, I find it tedioius to keep running out to check the propane level so I got a WIFI version of that as well:

Generac also markets these devices under their own name (though there's no difference other than the Generac logo on it).
