Looks like mechanical damage to me, too. Beans I grow on a rough metal trellis get like that sometimes when we have lots of wind. Some varieties are more easily damaged. Fortex is one variety I remember showing damage at times. Yours look more damaged than I remember seeing on mine...but maybe you pulled out the worst ones to photograph.

naturegirl, yes those were the worst. vgkg, no hail here but it has been windy lately. We are in Tampa, FL.

How about a wild guess! The top two beans look like they've been "branded". Are you growing on a metal trellis/support with that blistering Florida sun heating the metal up? Just a wild-ast thought lol.

Ditto on mechanical damage, either through wind (most likely) or rough harvesting. If those are the worst examples, though, the damage may be just a minor inconvenience. I usually get some of those too, especially on Fortex.

vgkg, plenty of moisture; rdback, plastic trellis; zeedman, I can't remember seeing this before. Next time I plant that location, it will be shelling beans.

Shuffles, I generally plant my pole beans on the East side of the garden now, where they are sheltered by trellises of other things. For the most part, that eliminates the wind bruising, unless a strong thunderstorm goes through. Shell beans or limas go on the West side, since bruising is not an issue for them.

I've had good luck planting pole beans adjacent to the South wall of a structure too; but in my latitude, that location is best used for yardlong beans, due to the extra reflected heat. Probably not a good idea to plant beans there - in your neck of the woods - for the same reason.
