ISO cheap, short-term flooring for home office

I moved into my house in July. My beloved little dog almost immediately started peeing on the original, ivory carpet, which I don't want anyway. He's not accustomed to carpet and is marking like crazy, in addition to a few days during Sub-Zero temps when he just decided he didn't want to go outside.

I don't want to invest much money because eventually I want to put down hardwoods to match the rest of the house. Unfortunately I can't afford hardwoods anytime soon. However this carpet is DISGUSTING. I need to rip it out ASAP. I would have no problem with leaving it just with the subflooring for months, but I'm sure he will pee again on that because I'm sure the smell went through the carpet and padding.

I'm genuinely considering putting down a tarp or something just to get me through. I want something that's easy to clean and cheap just to get me through six months or so. Someone suggested carpet squares. Thoughts?
