kitchen lighting

I have a chandelier in the middle of my u-shaped island but I had always wanted pendants over the island. my question is, when you have a u-shaped island what are the best options... perhaps it's too much space to be putting pendants everywhere. Do I stick with the chandelier or can I go pendants? thoughts?

There are many more issues here than lighting.................and I apologize in advance for saying that. Who in heck designed this kitchen? I shall pray not you.

A very liner fixture at junction of breakfast bar and work space. About 48 inches in length, parallel to the long side........and a prayer. : )

Please enlighten me Jan. Pun intended. The kitchen has been quite functional for us but I would love to hear all of your thoughts.

I don't want to enlighten you here. I really don't. I'll let someone else take the heat and be beaten senseless. If it works for you, it works for you.Have a great day. The linear advice stands. I shall stop right there. You asked about a light. Linear. Apologies again.

Why would you be beaten senseless for your advice... that's what I am asking for. ♀️

I appreciate your comments and advice. Thank you. And I agree the fridge should be counter depth, that will happen when it is changed out. Unfortunately the fridge could not go to the wall on the right because two of those cupboard doors actually lead to a pantry.
As for the two tone... well I wanted two toned and opted for the uppers being light colored cabinets not the flowers because of too many small kids with dirty hands. I guess it didn't translate well. luckily those are all things that can be changed. :)

I have both asked for advice and thanked you for the input you have given this far. I am not sure why you are being so saucy towards me as if I have been hostile regarding your input?!

I'm not being "saucy" hon. I told you, based on the pantry you mentioned........provide a drawing with dimensions. Advice aplenty will come your way. For a better island, a better fridge locale, a less disjointed look and a lot more. You stated a reason for the fridge locale........it is the FIRST thing I would relocate. Followed by other things. None of this can be advised minus a drawing with dimensions, and will simply frustrate you and ever other here, who advises.

Thanks we will keep the magnets however, they are collections from our travels and family photos and this is our family space not someone's showhome. We don't mind it looking like real people live here. ;)

And for now, I'm going to just address the lighting, renos will have to be some other time. I will definitely take your advice for something linear. thanks again.

    Shannon,

Is this more of an aesthetic or personal preference in regard to your chandelier?

Are you just tired of looking at it or do you require better light over you L-Shape i.e. kids doing homework there?

Hi Janie. it is more of an aesthetic thing as there is hoards of light. the loving room that is adjacent to it is basically all windows. I just feel like that light is "off". I'm have also considered installing a "fandelier" in that space instead but truthfully I'm stumped what would look best.

A "fandelier" may be a great choice, especially with the stove top being right there.

I have to agree with Jan but since you love it keep it and yes a linear fixture would be best.

Will some "talent " pleeeeze photo shop the bilious green to a pale wisp of gray paint and post it?! Thank you Houzzers!

I love the green, Shannon, and so appreciate your grace and insistence on keeping things your family loves. Yay to magnets and kids drawings on fridges!!!!

Jan the house is in Mexico and the green paint is very true to the old style there. Not everything has to be neutral, to be beautiful. It makes feel alive and is cheery like the outdoors.

Yes...... I understand and the green may have been WONDERFUL with cabinets all of ONE tone. It's visually sliced into thirds. If you're happy, as I said before, do your thing.

I can agree with that Jan. I do want them to all be wood stained, not white. that will come in time. :)

    Here is an alternate suggestion.

    Keep the white cabinets.

    following...

Thanks Bev. I enjoy the green si eventually I will just have the white cabinets get good stained like the rest. :) As well there is a custom backsplash being installed so no need to repaint that section.

Hi Shannon. Thank you for posting. What is the style of the rest of the home? Traditional Mexican homes are know for their bold mix of colors, so the green makes sense as a base. Perhaps you could incorporate a fixture that would tie together the greens, browns and grays of your space. Like everyone else it seems that a liner fixture would be best for you unless your budget allows for the electrician to create new holes for junction boxes. Please feel free to reach out to Shakuff should one of the below spark interest. We are happy to help @info@shakuff.com or (212)675-0383.

Shakuff, thanks for your post. Our house is full of fun traditional bold mexican colors. The living room which is off the kitchen is yellow. see attached photo. I love the types of fixtures you posted, however part of me what's something a little more sparkly, a blend of traditional Mexican style and glam would be idea in my eyes. But I'm going to check those out because I need something like that for the open staircase.

Oh and I should mention that if I need to add new junction boxes that is something I am prepared to do. :)

Shannon, I don't have any lighting recommendations (sorry), but I LOVE the green paint. If you had me over for dinner I would not leave the kitchen with that color.

Thanks salex! we love it too. :)
