I would think about keeping the area bright, trying getting your lowers a more neutral color to tie into your kitchen. White uppers, painting over the green. I would update the hardware. Maybe think about replacing a few doors with glass inserts on your upper cabinets!

I love the look of dark lowers and light uppers. I think your idea is great.

if you can't replace the cabs, I'd paint them. all of them. your two tone idea is fine.

That vanity lighting thing over the sink is ridiculous, not to mention a hazard. please put aside some money from the sale and have recessed lights installed (in the ceiling!) (or maybe make a deal w/the seller for a kick-back in order to have that removed and redone)

Oh goodness, yes, lighting, wall paper, flooring at some point. That before and after is awesome. The floor and counter take on a different shade with the cupboards lighter! I like it!

you could actually add a little peninsula like this one above, just to the right of the window (losing the table and hutch, of course).

^^^I agree. It will be a great deal of work to paint those cabinets, even more than most because the doors are slatted rather than solid panels. Perhaps live with the kitchen until you have enough money for a re-do. I am saying this because not only will those cabinets be a huge job to paint (the sanding alone!), but also because new ones would go up to the ceiling, a more current look, and will make your ceiling look taller, and also the bonus of providing more storage. And you should get frameless cabinets. Those framed cabinets you have cut into the storage capacity a great deal, and the kitchen isn't that big, so would benefit from the additional interior space of frameless cabinets.

Regardless, I'd stay away from the "greige" you mentioned.

another, perhaps easier and potentially worthwhile choice: since the cabinet carcass areas have all been painted once anyway... Kelly green.....change that with your DIY paint skills to a different paint color [black is seen these days....maybe a white] and LEAVE the oak doors. New hardware.....again....this would alleviate toil as painting over previously painted surfaces is a really manageable task. And you would have a full array of colors to use w the oak doors. And even if a full replacement occurs with in a few[?] years...the money , time and trouble you've spent is insignificant. I think that's what I'd do. Change the light..pull the wallpaper...get a style to a window treatment....and you'd be good for a bit of time.

Make sure you sand and sand, and clean and clean those cabinets, and then use a good quality primer, and cabinet paint. It will look really nice when you are done. Love the cabinet colors in the last photo above this post (aqua).

Maybe match the existing face frame’s paint and paint the doors too? Green was a BIG trend at KBIS this year.

Before choosing any paint colors get some lighting in there . Leds in 3500-5000k range most of my clients like 4000K then the colors you choose will stay true at night instead of having that yellow tint form regular light bulbs.As for the color I thinkk that style of kitchen would easilty handle 2 tones.

Goodness, everyone! I love your ideas. I am remodeling the rest of the house before we move in so a complete change of the kitchen will come at a later date. You’ve given me a lot to think about and some great temporary & long-term thoughts!! Helps me determine what I should focus on first if I don’t do a complete overhaul right away.
