Formal living room help

Hi I have been working on this room for about a year and I’m not loving the carpet. The room seems off to me or is it just me? Carpet suggestions please.

I probably am repeating some things the others have said....I think the two rows of pictures over the chair are a bit much. I would remove all of the pictures you have above the chair...one or two are enough. I would lower the art over the couch. Then I would take all of the pillows out....leaving two on the couch only in an accent color...teal maybe?. A throw over one of the chairs in teal would be good also. Next I would remove some things from your table.s..leave a lamp and one thing on the end tables and for the coffee table...something low and neat... a wooden carved box, a low plant, a pretty bowl and that is all. You may want to have room on your tables for a cup of coffee if visitors come. you want to change the rug, by all means go ahead but I think simplifying what you have now will give you the look you want.

I have moved your framed photos so they read as ONE item on the wall and don't venture too close to the window.

If your rug selection is too BLUE it won't work. The blue needs a touch of green to incorporate all your colors.

Your rug needs a touch of green to the blue so it works.

Starting to get a bit too blue below.

You'd have more rugs with blue options without the teal pillow

Can I mix teal and aqua? Because I have aqua and teal together in the next rooms.

I have to confess I haven’t read all the comments yet. Your room is so well put together except for your throw pillows and accessories, so that’s where I would begin. The rug is not a problem. Even if you change the rug you will have the same problem. As for your accessories, I would take everything away and add back one at a time only those items that the room can’t do without. Stop when it feels comfortable and put the rest away for now or find new homes. As for your pillows there seems to be no forethought for color and pattern that would enhance the chairs and lamps. I like them very much, but there seems to be no effort to bring them into the mix. You have managed to tie in the art, sofa and carpet and even your little ottomans work. Your drapery and rod selections are delightful. As for the family photos in a formal room, I would not advise they be included. If they must remain then I would take out two of the pictures so it doesn’t overwhelm that small wall. Even better would be to hang only 5 (an odd number) which is more pleasing to the eye. Hope this helps!

    Thoughts on this carpet?

What pillows and accessories do you recommend? This maybe my issue and I have no idea what to remove. I did this family wall of pictures and I would like to keep them. This is the wall you see as soon as you walk into my house.

Maybe take a few pictures away? I like the family photos but it seems a little crowded.

As I demonstrated in my pictures a much tighter grouping is appropriate so they read as one.

Add some interest/ pattern with single lumbar pillows in the two chairs. Co-ordinate with art or new rug.

I have found two starter pillows which can be fun, depending on your taste. If either one is of interest, we can build. They are very different in appeal so they obviously are not meant to go together.

What do you think of these that I already have? I like both options you choose.

Of course they work! I think your room can use some energy where we don’t have so much “matching”. What do you think...that’s what’s important!

So what can I do on this wall?

    Following.

I liked the photos on that wall, I would just group them closer together! Great room. I did feel the family room coffee table should be closer to the sofa :-)

You could find two pcs of art and hang one over the other as a grouping. Do you have anything in the house you can borrow from another room. I’ll be happy to look for you if you have nothing else you can use. If I’m looking, give me a budget for that wall.

I am actually falling in love with yellow and gold. My theme is beach. My whole house has a beach soothing feel. We love mellow and I don’t know why I didn’t try this sooner. I’m going with gold pillows for the chairs I think. Will replace throw with yellow to match the accent pillow. I feel very happy right now. Will get hubby to move artwork later I’m not handy. Was thinking of painting frames gold? I don’t want to over do it but this space looks sooo good in person.

Thank you so much all of you for your help ;). If you have other suggestions please let me know. I’m unsure about the family wall but it’s practical and makes me want to read in here. I’m s teacher do I needed that owl!

What a beautiful home, you have decorated it so lovely, well done to you
  • 7 years ago
I really really like the gold/yellow pillow in the charcoal chair. For the couch, I’d use one of those teal patterned pillows against the yellow and remove the pillow on the throw. Angle the throw a bit — it’s really beautiful so let it sing by itself. For the coffee table I do like that round tray. I’d push it to the right (as everything in the room is really symmetrical so change it up) and decorate it with the white flowers you previously had on the side table, and maybe put a shallow bowl, maybe a catch all, on it as well. On the left side of the table, a stack of large art books.

For the pictures on the chair wall, group them more closely as someone advised above

    Just things to try!

Grey or teal rug. Gosh this is fun, isn’t it? ;-)

Thoughts? I went out and bought the beach themed picture as I had to see it. So out of my comfort zone.

You have drawn a color triangle with your yellow and have anchored everything with your rug. You have lost your total symmetry. you seem to be working with the essentials so your editing is paying off. This room has become lovely, inviting, cheerful and well done. The yellow is a brilliant move and your new piece of art is delicious with your palette. Bravo!

    Looks great!!

Awesome job. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I kinda like the last pillow, sea foam!
It’s a toss up between the teal and seafoam— maybe switch them out every once in a while??
Ok so I need more advise on the room beside this. I want to tie in this room. I don’t think this is working right now. I don’t have a budget to make too many changes. Just wanted a single piece. Would love suggestions thanks.

Your living room is so nice...I preferred it without chair pillows..if I sat there I would want to remove them. And I would hang family photos as one. Nice job.

I enjoy the chair pillows. They are so small and good on my back but of course you can just toss them around. I am planning to rearrange art work as one. Just waiting for my very busy hubby to get to it. I have him working on so many projects. Looking for advise on other room now.
