new "classic" speedqueen or maytag

So our washer is making a terrible noise and we are in the market for a new washer and dryer. We have absolutely hated the front loaders and want a more traditional "old school" version. That brought us to the speed queen. Of course we start looking and realize that in 2018 they were changed and there's a lot of negativity around it. We found the Maytag MVWP575 which was supposed to be the competition of the speed queen. Decided on it then I start calling for prices and found a local dealer that sells both. He recommended the new "classic" squeed queen. He said that it would be better than the maytag because of the way it is made and that they corrected all of the faults from the 2018 version.

I do really get the differences between the two and they way that are made. From what I have been told the maytag has a plastic outer tub and loose tub. The speed queen has a few issues with how it is made but still is supposed to be superior but it's a new model with changes. The SQ also seems to have more negatives around the dryers.

I have concerns over both, but the maytag is a lot less expensive. At this point, I am leaning towards it. I want clean clothes and a washer and dryer that will last longer. Would the speed queen really be worth the extra cost?

What brand/model is your current machine? A "terrible noise" isn't always fatal. Whirlpool/Kenmore/Roper etc. direct-drive machines from circa early 1980s to late 2000s can make a loud painful-sounding noise if the motor coupler breaks ... which is equivalent to a broken belt and is a very easy fix. If that kind of machine is by chance what you have, you're MUCH better off repairing it than getting either the SQ or Maytag of question.

One of my family's 2002 Maytag started making a grinding noise on occasion, then locked-up completely. Turned out to be a bad pump, which at the time (seven years ago) cost $37.15

Get the speed queen and never look back! There’s a reason they have a cult following. Even if it’s a 2018, it will out perform the competition. You’ll know it the second you lift the lid.

I have the 2017 analog Speed Queen and TOL electronic SQ dryer. Love the washer, but not as happy with the dryer. I do not like the lint filter design of the dryer at all because of where it is located. The temps are too high-medium is what I would consider high, high is scorching. Also, I don't think the sensors are as sensitive as machines I have had in the past. The dryer is not terrible by any means, but a thousand or so dollars to pay for a dryer that is not perfect (what in life is?) is a lot of money. If you do not care about the machines being different brands, consider the classic SQ washer matched with a different dryer.

If I were getting a top loader, I would get the Speed Queen for sure. My current front loader is slowly dying, and I plan to get a Speed Queen front loader this time. There are no bells and whistles, but I understand the Queens wash very well and last a long time. Those are all the criteria I need.

Well, let's just say that we own ours now for 4 days and it already quit working. This is a TR7000 series. I had high hopes, but today it won't drain or spin. I suspect the belt either tore or became disengaged. So 3 hours of handwashing a load of wet, soapy clothes this evening after using a pool cover pump to suck all the water out of the tub. Such fun.

My initial impression is that SQ is garbage. I'll change my mind when (if?) they fix this thing and it actually keeps working. Right about now wish I had my 40-year old Maytag back. I've read that changing the belts on these SQ is a hard job - have to remove the motor and hoses. On my Maytag, it was a 10-minute job by just reaching underneath. So far...I'm NOT imprressed with SQ in any way and wish I had my money back.

Your TR7 is a different mechanical design than the "classic" model of discussion in this thread. The belt on yours is much easier to change ... should be a simple matter of slipping it onto the two pulleys, motor and spin/agitate drive shaft. The pump is a separate electric motor unit, the hoses to it shouldn't be involved in a belt change.
