I agree with suzyq53. Slab on the stove wall would be beautiful.

I will be the outlier here. I have experienced dark backsplashes and they really darken an area. There are some nice white tiles now with a slight variation on subway.

I dont think the slabs an option unfortunately. Any ideas besides white subway?

I agree the right pale gray pulled from the flooring could work, but still think it'd have to b a subway tile or simple tile to not compete with the floor and counter.

I feel like you can go with white for your backsplash but maybe a bit of texture.

Here are some ideas from Tilebar. You can order some samples from them and see what works best with the rest of you kitchen choices. It would be nice if the pattern in the tile repeated some of the pattern from your floor. I like the third one down, that looks a bit like woven leaves. I think something like this could be very nice and not busy but give a little more interest than a plain white subway tile.

One more thing to consider before tiling the stove wall would be lowering all the outlets and turning them horizontal. I think they can be 1" above the countertop. I don't think you're going to like them in the middle of your field tile like that.

Those are all nice in their own way, but the floor is the star in your kitchen. Avoid movement on the backsplash.

Also consider getting a sample of this one from Lowe’s...I fear that it might to cool of a gray but you never know.

White tile will make a nice crisp color scheme and you can change the wall color at will.

I hope you can find a grey that is close to the one in the floor tile. What about a long white tile with a sheen? It could look very clean and not compete with the floor.

Shelves would be practical, but not wood finish if that will be the only wood not in the space - go with black, white or SS.

I could see an interesting metal wall sculpture there too.

I was going to do wood shelves to tie in the rest of the house which is mostly hardwood! Should i pass on that since this room itself has zero wood?

I would do black shelves with a mixture of black, white, and gray dishes. And then have some wood accents mixed in with possibly a light mixture, cutting boards, etc...

If you do shelves...make sure you can open cabinet on the right:)

I am not sure why the other posters and designers are having a strong reaction to wood shelves. I thought it was a great idea. Maybe the suggestion by @ljptwt7 to stain the wood black would work. Personally, I wouldn't do stainless. I think there is enough stainless right now. I am looking forward to seeing it finished. I want to see the rest of your house too!!

I love kjoy's mock up but I don't think the shelves can go like that without blocking the cabinet on the right.

@karenrose haha we are restaurant people/owners so my husband is big into all the kitchen appliances/cooking... this is a little mini kitchen, not our main. I would never let him put that thing in the main kitchen

I would do 2 the same size. Can’t really recommend size from my end...you will have to play with it. Put some tape up to visualize different sizes...making sure you have enough room to open cabinet on the right. Everything in my mock up is from Crate and Barrel:)

Do you like open shelving? If so, two black painted wood shelves would give you the opportunity to put colorful glasses and dishes there. Or, keep your eyes open for a fabulous metal wall piece. That could take a long time to find, but could be a real “wow” to add to your amazing kitchen. It came out great!

Curious what the venting requirements are for having a grill inside a house? If the venting is powerful enough to handle that, is make up air needed?

Since there is no dishwasher, how about a plate rack? This one in stainless is pretty cool.

@AJCN makeup air is 100% needed because the exhaust venting is a commerical exhaust fan make for restaurant. The exhaust moves about 2100 CFM and the makeup brings in about 1500. This will ensure no smoke at all in the house - Husband

@kjoy1 is there any general rule of how high up from the counter top shelves should be mounted? I purchased 2 black shelves like your photo - they are thicker though. Want to get them mounted but want to get the distance right! Any suggestions?

Thoughts on decor/arrangement?

Shelves look good. What if you did a stainless mixing bowl or a pretty blue mixing bowl instead of the bowls and mug on the bottom shelf?

Nudge the picture (bottom shelf) in a little and remove the mug it is too bulky there. If you feel that the picture alone is just too bare, find a little figurine (less than the height of the mug), maybe something carved from soapstone. A ceramic or metal trivet that echoes the colors already in the room might be an option instead of the picture - to kind of balance against the mass of the pottery..

Leana Giannios what countertops did you finally install? Soapstone Metropolis or another counter? They are lovely in the photos!

I would not add anymore black...the floor is the focal pointe the rest are just supporting actors....I would add gold or chrome hardware....if you add shelves I would add white or a beautiful warm wood..it would be nice to add some warmth...backsplash needs to be white for sure you could beveled subway tiles or Ogee it would be nice mix with your flooring.

I would choose a light grey countertop, I love your floors!

Is that a gas grill instead of a range? I have never seen that..so curious...I think your shelves are too short...I realize you already have them up but longer and a bit more space between them would really look great and the proportions would be better visually.
