For some reason, I have never grown Coleus throughout my entire life of growing things. Until now. I wasn't planning on growing any, but when I checked out the small greenhouse at my local grocery store, I spotted two six-packs of Black Dragon Coleus for sale that caught my eye. They were the only ones, so I bought them for probably $2/each. These sat in my front yard all Spring, where the only care they got from me was the rain that fell on them.

When I went back later, I found two completely red Coleus with some hints of purple, a bright green Coleus, and two green Coleus with some purple splashed all over them. I took them home and repotted all of them into this wooden planter.

I originally had some species tulips growing in it, but after their short blooming cycle, all I was left with was some half dead, drab-looking foliage just sitting there not doing anything. Yeah, I know they need to store up energy for next season, but they seemed like more of a hassle than they were worth; all for some blooms that don't even last very long anyways. In the end, it was a good call doing away with them and choosing these gorgeous plants instead.

After I was finished repotting them, I took the planter and mounted it to my front living room windowsill...

Shortly thereafter, I noticed my nosy neighbors walking back and forth past my house. At first, I thought they were trying to look in thru my window. That is, until I remembered I had just mounted this planter, and I guess they wanted to take a much closer look at it. I have many other plants growing around my garden, but the color of these beauties most definitely stand out from the rest.

I'm no stranger to Coleus, despite my never growing them before, but once I saw these varieties, I just had to have them. Even though you can't really see them, I do have a couple of pink Anthuriums on either side of this planter as well. I plan on repotting them into one larger pot, to coincide with my deep red Anthurium that I have growing elsewhere. But for the time being, they bring a little more color to these already colorful plants. So I've decided to leave them , for now.
