OT: Brain Surgery

My grandson's wife will be having brain surgery at 7:30 tomorrow (Tuesday) morning. Of the over 12,000 surgeries this surgeon ( Dr. Fukushima at Duke in Raleigh) has done, he has only done 5 like this.

Would appreciate prayers and good thoughts. Thank you.

    Father God,

I praise You and Your plan for Sharon's granddaughter-in-law today. I know You need only whisper, and her body will be renewed. I pray every cell You wonderfully created be restored to the perfection You first made when You formed her. I pray You hold Sharon and her family

during this surgery today. May they feel Your loving hands and arms wrapped around them securely. Father, I ask You guide the doctors and nurses today. Task their hands to provide attentive and skillful care for her. Give them wisdom to quickly remedy any need that might arise during her hospital stay. I also ask for strength, LORD. Give her the strength to recover well. Give Your body of believers strength to continue lifting her in prayer. Give her family strength to provide loving care as she heals. Keep the enemy far from her and her family, Father. Let not even one thought of defeat enter their minds or spirits. I ask You remind us of Your words contained in Your holy scripture. Let these be a nourishment to all through her entire recovery process. I know, Father, Your thoughts are not our thoughts; and Your ways are not our ways. Whatever Your plan in this moment, we will praise You. In Jesus' name, I lift these prayers to You. AMEN

Grandson's update a few hours ago: "I talked to both drs. They both said the surgery went very well. It wasn’t a cyst. It was cavernoma that was being “hugged” by the third optical never and it looked like it had ruptured. The nerve was stretched so we won’t know if it was damaged or the extent of the damage for three months. She is in recovery."

I don't think he has seen her yet. I had to look up cavernoma and it's a group of abnormal blood vessels in the brain and looks like a raspberry. Thank you, everyone, for your prayers and thoughts. Hugs......

Sharon, I'm so glad to hear the good news. What a frightening malady. Isn't it wonderful what medicine can do for us today. My thoughts are with you all.

She is out of ICU and in a private room. She has been up, brushed her teeth, sat in a recliner for awhile and made a 15 word post on FaceBook.

Wow! I didn't want to even look at a computer, let alone type that soon after surgery. Bless her heart. Maybe she had Matt type it for her.

    God is good!

I talked with Matt and Heather today. Matt said the doctor had reserved the operating room for 6 hours but was hoping it would only take about 4 hours. He then told me that the doctor was in the waiting room talking to him 2 1/2 hours after Heather was taken into surgery. Doctor said he'd never had such a surgery go so smoothly. This is why I ask for prayer and good thoughts. I love it when doctors are astounded! I appreciate it so much that so many of you have kept our family in your prayers and thoughts. Feeling thankful........

I wholeheartedly believe in the power of prayer, and am always honored when someone requests me to pray for them. Also, extremely grateful for skilled doctors and modern medicine. We live in an amazing time with all the advancements in understanding how the body works. Continuing to pray for Heather's recovery. Thanks much for keeping us updated. ((HUGS))

It’s late Tuesday night and I’m hoping all is well with Heather at home and doing well.

I'm sorry I thought I had posted an update. They were able to fly home today (Tuesday) and are sleeping in their own beds tonight. :-) Three months until they know if she'll regain normal sight in her eyes. Family has filled her freezer with food and friends are setting up dinners to be brought in for a few weeks until she gets crested up and recovers a bit more. I'll check in with her later and see how things are going at home. An 18 year old son should be able to take care of a lot of things and the baby is 11 this year so they are well able to wait on her if she needs help. Thank you so much for keeping her and our family in your prayers.

I am so pleased. Now prayers for eyesight to return to normal.

What a lovely update! I'm glad to know they have a good community supporting them, as that always helps the recovery process. Continued prayers for the entire family, and especially for restored eyesight.

    Update 7/8 from Heather:

I received some great news today from Dr. Fukushima’s nurse Lori. The tumor that was removed was completely benign. Unfortunately he was not able to remove the whole tumor because my third nerve was wrapped around it quite tightly. The small portion that is left should not give me any issues as it is like a small blood clot that should not grow again.

I was able to go to Dr. Caughill today and discuss a prism for my glasses so my left eye will go back to normal. Dr. Fukushima told Matt after my surgery that if I had waited much longer then I would have lost my left eyesight completely. God is good in his timing and there is definitely a reason why I went to North Carolina.

I have an appointment tomorrow to see about getting my stitches removed so if everything looks good I may be in the clear tomorrow.

She put up a picture on FB showing where her hair had to be shaved and the line of stitches. It looks clean and healthy to me. :-) Again, thank you for all your prayers, strength and support for our family.
