How is CO in general for hostas or gardening? My daughter lives in Fort Collins but I would hesitate to move there if I am unable to garden with hostas.

Don, you are such a show off! :-) Really in all truth, your yard is stunning and I have learned so much from you (and others) on this forum. And the NOID is what I call an “areo-marginata”. Haha. What I think are “Francee” in my yard, have a thinner leaf. They are beginning to bloom and have a purple flower coming. But France is my NOID that I decided was France after my research. But would love to know if it’s not.

Thanks, Teuth. That is indeed Cathedral Windows. About the berm: It's actually lower than my lawn, but it does look built up in a lot of my pictures. It isn't encroaching on any of the tree trunk bases. (The rocks came with the house. I removed tons of them before I finally gave up. Now, I just live with 'em.) Here is a pic with a more accurate showing of the grade of my backyard:

Ah, thanks for the extra photo and explanation. I have a similar slope with trees which could use some building up, so I was curious about how much you can add around existing trees.

Thank you, Lindalana. Hostas seem to like the climate here. The main challenges here for hostas are the temperature fluctuations (freeze/thaw/freeze/thaw) in early spring, and hail is common here. The severity of each varies pretty widely from season to season (THIS season, so far, has been great!) I don't know how unique these challenges are to Colorado compared to other states. Popmama and Sunnywood are also residents of Colorado; perhaps they'll see these comments and weigh in on gardening in Colorado. I live about an hour south of Fort Collins. Seems like a nice town.

I wanted to mention- Bob Solberg wrote an article about his recent trip to Japan, where he was tracking down the origins of some of the hostas... and he said that in their natural state they grow in very very rocky ground - looked like in some places there was more rock than soil. So- no wonder yours look so good!

I’m thinking the rock probably makes a nice “mulch” especially since you appear to have some good shade! If I put a lot of rocks all around my hostas the reflected sun/heat would just fry them even faster than they already do!

I envy your shade... as I wait for my trees to grow! And - I admire your spacing... it’s a lesson I’m learning the hard way - I’ve realized they usually get bigger (a lot bigger) than their stated width!
