I agree that Mel’s Heritage roots easily. One of MH’s canes was covered with soil by a pesky gopher, digging on the slope. We had ample spring rain for once this year. I went to cut that cane back, and discovered it had rooted to the ground and made a new plant with zero help from me. It’s the first time a gopher has actually given me a new rose bush, instead of taking one away! Lol. I definitely didn’t have the space for another Mel’s Heritage to grow in that spot, and had planned to remove it. My “bonus daughter” Sarah was over for a visit and asked if she could dig it up and take it home. I was happy to have her do the digging job for me. It was much easier than expected, since it hadn’t rooted very deeply yet. I’ll have to ask her how Mel’s Heritage jr. is doing at her place. I know she was nervous about telling her husband that the long established bougainvillea covering a huge wall/fence would need removing. She’s seen how mine has grown over the years, and knows that’s the only suitable place she has. She was extremely happy to get my “happy accident” Mel’s Heritage.

Mel’s Heritage has a special place in Sarah’s heart, and not just because it’s my favorite rose of all time. When she tragically lost her mother a few years back, we held her mom’s memorial on the beach in Del Mar. I cut and arranged the flowers the morning of the memorial. This was in mid-November. The only rose I had an abundance of for cutting and filling large vases was Mel’s Heritage. There were plenty of those luscious blooms in November. I used Mel’s Heritage exclusivity for her mom’s service. She now associates the sight and scent of Mel’s Heritage with her mother, in a good way. It’s a special rose to us in so many ways.

So, I just made a novel out of saying, “Yes, Mel’s Heritage roots very easily.” It’s the only rose that’s ever done that here. Lisa

That's a pretty wonderful "novel." :-) I think I need to get DH to propagate some, this year, for HRG to sell.

Has anyone gotten Connie Lohn or seen it available from RVR? I haven't seen it but also have only been looking for it for a few months, do you guys know if it's still propagated there? Thanks!

Thank you all who posted here!!! Even HMF has very little info on Barden roses and I hate that RVR doesn't have reviews or anything on most roses. I debated on golden buddha, jeri jennings, and janet inada (with very little information to decide on) .....but I so want Joyce Barden...love, love the look...has yet to be in stock at RVR.

Ann, I’m not too far from you, in Portland, and just got a young Jeri Jennings from a local rose friend who received a spare with his order. JJ looks like she is going to be a wonderful Hybrid Musk for my arch. Her clusters of blooms are buttery golden-yellow with peach edges and what I’d call a sweet licorice fragrance. GORGEOUS! Joyce B looks like a fantastic rose, too. If only I could grow them all! I’d love to see pics if you get JB.

Hi @User--it's a baby! I got it from RVR earlier this summer. It may have had a bloom on it when I first got it, but it's hard for me to recall. Really excited about it! Do you know if Connie Lohn will make a return? It's so pretty and I'm really hoping to get at least one mossed rose in my garden.

@Aaron Rosarian Zone 5b I hope you got the correct rose! Sadly, RVR has a problem with labeling their inventory, as we know. I just hope yours is correct.

As for 'Connie Lohn', I have no idea if RVR still has it. It doesn't ever appear to be "in stock", so who knows. My two plants were destroyed in the 2015 Vortex, so its gone from my collection.

Aaron, I don’t have Connie Lohn. I moved from Kentucky to Minnesota last July and left several Barden roses behind.

I know this is an older thread but does anyone actually have a pic of Connie Lohn,? or Uncondicional Love, i just bought those, along with Golden Buddha, Treasure Trail and Jeri Jennings. it took a long time for them to come back iin stock at RVR and i was on a waitlist for ever but finally i got the notice they were back iin stock. Waiting on Dakota Redwing to come back in stock now. I am dying to know what Connie Lohn looks like, i have only seen one pic of a rose, not sure if it was even open all of the way or not. the leaves are tiny on it and it is a cute plant and well rooted, that were coming out of the bottom of the pot. Dying for that Song of the Stars too.

I’ve been waffling over Golden Buddha and Oshun. Does anybody here have experience with those?

I just had gotten my Golden Buddha from RVR and it has a bud on it and when it opened it was so pretty and already had a great scent.

Before I moved, I had Golden Buddha, Mel’s Heritage and Pam’s choice.

Mel’s Heritage bloomed from April to December, taking a break to build up for the huge spring flush. If I do say so myself, it was a sight to behold. It was easily 25’ x15’, and showed no signs of stopping. I live in the warm, dry climate of Southern CA. It loves the warm weather. I dont get blackspot or Japanese beetles here. I do get powdery mildew, but Mel’s Heritage never had it. Here are a few pics of Mel’s Heritage in all his glory.

I’ve seen your fabulous photos of Mel’s Heritage before, Lisa, but wow! I am just agog. I can only imagine how that must look and smell in real life. My own MH is building up in size but nothing like this, and frankly, I don’t have room to allow this kind of size. It will need to be contr.

@opineonline I have had Golden Buddha for a couple of years, and have never seen blooms that pink while opening. I question if you got a correctly labeled plant. I wonder if others that have grown it can chime in?

@Brandon Garner, it was the maiden bloom, the outside of the petal was pink as you can see in the pic but when it first opened it was yellowish with the pink only showing on the reverse and it was on the plant for while open and slowly turned more pink. but who knows, we will see. What does your's look like? Mine was pretty representative of the flower i saw on Rogue Valley when it first opened.

Thanks Brandon, i like your video! This one was more apricot when it first opened with a slight pink tinge, i wish i had taken a pic of it right when it bloomed, it looked more like yours. are yours pink of the reverse of the petal with pink buds? I will keep watching it!

My Golden Buddha was wonderful. So many roses grow into giants in my soil and climate. Golden Buddha remained compact and short. It almost always had blooms on it. Ocassionaly it had a bit of powdery mildew, but nothing serious. I kept is at about 2’ wide by 3’ tall.

Opineonline, my Golden Buddah did not show any pink tones. Maybe i’ts because it’s the first bloom. I really hope that’s the case. Mine was a yolk yellow(think free range chickens) that faded to an offwhite. Mine received full, hot CA sun all day long. If I could change anything about Golden Buddha, it would be that the blooms didn’t fade so much. Overall, it was a lovely and healthy plant. Lisa

Lisa and Brandon, i would say mine looks like Lisa's first pic, if you look closely you can see the buds are sort of reddish? I would say mine went through the colors of your first pic intertwined with the clematis, the second 2 pics look more yellow, maybe it is temperature but i do see what i would call Pinkish tones infirst pic. I will definetly keep an eye on it. i know there have been issues with them sending incorrect roses in the past.

Hey Lisa! Im glad you are back and well. You are the one that got me hooked to PB roses. How do I get Mel's to bloom more? Mine had one big flush in June and another tiny one later.

I have Mel's heritage, Golden Buddha, Oshun, Little grey Pearl and soon Connie and Marianne. I want Dakota Redwing and Oui.

Does anyone have precious dream? Not a Paul Barden rose but PB recommended it and I put it in with my order recently. I'm wondering if I should just switch it out for another Oshun.

Looking over this thread about Paul's lovely rose creations, I thought I would update the progress of Mel's Heritage in my zone. I'm very very happy to report that another try at Mel's Heritage has resulted in winter survival. Not just survival, but almost tip hardy!!! All this with a winter that in Feb/March was bitterly cold for several weeks, with at least a week of solid below 0 F temperatures, down to as low as -20F.

Here are some caveats about how:

We are now officially zone 6 with warmer average temperatures

This was planted close to the house on the south sunny side so it's a virtual zone 7 spot

The rose was surrounded with filled leaf bags and tucked into its bed with oak leaves covering it for the winter

The rose grew on in a kiddie swimming pool for about a month with all the water it wanted before planting. I'll post in another thread how very much difference I think it has made in both the vigor and winter survival of ALL my roses.

Mel's Heritage is still not a large climber, but it's only in its second year. I'd say the canes are about a foot long and still a delicate floppy state at the moment. However, it's already leafing out with the daffodils and ready to take on more growth for the season.

SoCal - on another note, I had a Precious Dream (Moore mini) for about 10 years on the sunny west side of my house and it bloomed regularly and survived the winters well. The blooms were small but the plant was bushy (maybe 2 feet tall) and the color stayed mostly apricot without fading too much to cream like a lot of roses in that color scheme. I'm replacing it this year from Burlington (after losing all my roses in 2022). I recommend it - it's a solid little rose in that color scheme.

WOO HOO Mel's Heritage! Mine may never look a fraction as gorgeous as Lisa's but I'll settle for whatever blooms that beauty cares to grace me with.

It's my first moss rose too. Do you like minis? I'm wanting to load up on them since all the other roses get too big in my zone .

Cynthia I wish you would comment more. I can tell you have a lot of knowledge. I still have to look for Nigrette rose you suggested. Does it fade or turn magenta quickly in heat? Did your precious dream have a fragrance? Any pictures you could share 🤗?

I'm here to report that Dakota Redwing is TIP-HARDY in Cincinnati after some prolonged coldspells of -8F. I hope to get more blooms this year now that that area is been weeded!! The rose bloom itself has exceeded expectations.

SoCal - it's on page 2 now - What are your Blackest Red roses. There are a lot of pictures that show you some option of roses that don't pink out.
