Does anyone have experience with bamboo flooring?

We would like to install bamboo flooring in our house, so I was wondering what would be the most reliable company with good quality product since it seems that variations in quality can be pretty large?

We went with bamboozle... The guy was a true artisan and it is gorgeous... Especially love the stairs ... There lots of cheap imitations about but they don't look good

We did a kitchen remodel recently and the homeowners went with bamboo flooring from Lumber Liquidators of all places! We were pleasantly surprised that the flooring was great quality. We weren't trying to show the floor in any of our pictures, but you can see it nicely in this shot.

Where are you located? I have supplied and installed 30-50 bamboo projects and I can tell you that the product is great when it is installed properly. Are you installing over concrete or wood subfloors? How long do you plan on staying in the home? Do you have kids or inside dogs? There are lots to consider when picking a wood floor but I have found that this is especially true for bamboo floors. The more you are willing to share the more I would be willing to advise. Good luck.

    Dear Patrick,

We live in San Diego. In the meantime I have done some research on Lumbar Liquidator's bamboo. Sounds like their products have caused a lot of health issues due to excessive amounts of formaldehyde which becomes obvious immediately after installation due to strange odor. You can check this post out, but seems a lot of people have had serious issues with it...

Since you seem to have a lot of experience, do you know of a bamboo product that is safe or without formaldehyde? Also do you think overall bamboo is better than engineered wood or hard wood. We have concrete floors, 1 child no pets. We plan to stay in the house for many years to come. Also, how does bamboo behave in the kitchen? Thanks a lot, I really appreciate your help.

Thank you for the feedback on Lumber Liquidators bamboo. I have heard of this concern more than once. I will treat you with same respect I treat my clients and friends. I will always share my advise but will ultimately default to your wishes.

Can I first ask why you are sold on installing bamboo?

We are not at all, it just looked nice and the price was good, but do you have any other suggestions, moderate cost wood flooring with no health concerns? I like light color... thanks again.

Hawa Bamboo and Exotic Wood Flooring Manufacturers
www.hawabamboo.com/Hawa Bamboo and Wood Flooring Products is a well known hardwood floor manufacturer distributing fine flooring products in the US since 1993.
    ________________________________________________________________________________
You got me there! But why not check with these people and see? If they have been in the business since 1993, they may have learnt a thing or two about pleasing their customers. Please visit website and check dear. There are many others, But why not start with this one. Hope you are in the USA. I saw a picture of another kitchen floor which I cannot find now. But I submitted it on another discussion page. That had very narrow bamboo strips like you get on Japanese tats. That looked very attractive to me. One thing though. Bamboo flooring is the rage now but you should check on the advantages and the disadvantages. One story was that they use toxic adhesive to stick them together. They use toxic adhesive on anything and everything if I am not mistaken. That could be just rival talk. Anyway you should check everything before you spend. If you want more websites, there is plenty. Good luck with your floors. I will follow your progress because I love bamboo in any form.

We are installing Bellawood Bamboo from Lumber Liquidators in FR, kitchen, DR, hall. FR installed so far. Read about health issues on Internet after install. So far, no fumes. Contractor liked the flooring, but he said to be careful b/c finish seems to scratch easily. We have 2 dogs.

From what understood from my research, strand woven is the way to go for bamboo. It's hard and durable, doesn't have the formaldehyde issues and also looks beautiful. We've had it for 3 years and its been awesome. The crystal clear coat has gotten scratched, but that is easily hidden with a good polish. Only a couple of divots in the actual wood and that's from stupid stuff, ie dropping a hammer

    Love it, love it!

Can't agree with 6 Peyton more!

Bamboo is very "enviro"-trendy but like any "green" product, subject to tremendous "greenwashing." You need to consider material source, material treatment and material assembly. Any one of those not geared toward environmental benefits can make bamboo useless as a "green" choice.

The things you want to ask for are:
    - Low VOC, no-added formaldehyde (NAF) or no-added urea formaldehyde (NAUF) binder. Soy based is best.
    - Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification, and ideally locally sourced.

The "greenest" bamboo we've seen is PlybooPure Bamboo Flooring by Smith & Fong Company.
    http://www.plyboo.com/products

But keep in mind, "green" depends on what you use as a measure. FSC for woods is a must. But not a lot of North America FSC grown bamboo stock, and then not always in the product that uses no-VOC. Most stock comes from China. The amount of energy it takes to get that bamboo from China to your home in the US ("embodied energy") makes it no more environmentally friendly compared to FSC oak grown & milled 300 miles from your home.

These are a few other sources for environmentally friendly bamboo flooring:

    (FSC certified)

    (Sustainably harvested but not FSC)

I don't know of a North American sourced bamboo flooring with FSC certification, but am all ears!!
