It's not about the décor. Door knobs are tools. Which one works better for you? Which feels better? Which is easier to grasp day-in and day-out for the next few years? Choose that.

I don't really care for either one (not my style), but I particularly dislike the feel of square or rectangular knobs; it's as though there is only one right way to grasp them and I'm not doing it. Too fiddly. But it's not my kitchen, and there will only be a few hands that ever touch those knobs--yours and your family's.

I would use round knobs. If rectangular ones loosen even slightly they won't be straight up and down. They are also easier to pull from any angle.

I think the square look really nice, but agree that in a place where they will be used a lot, chances are the squares will turn and it will be obvious when you look at them. I sure like your pull choice, too.

Use the esiting hole then drill the other hole.

To protect the new paint job, I suggest all pulls, because when people grab knobs there's a tendancy for fingernails to scratch the paint around knobs over time of use. If get knobs, keep touch up paint for future.
