Design help for small bedroom closets

last modified: 7 years ago

We'd like to redo our small reach-in closets in our master and guest bedrooms to improve usability and organization. One would be for a woman and the other for a man.

They are 20 inches deep and 52 inches wide, with a 30 inch swing out door in the middle.

They are about 95 inches from floor to ceiling

Any suggestions? The real tricky part seems to be how to use the sides; they're just deep enough to make getting stuff out a little challenging.

These closets are too shallow for adult clothing. The standard minimum depth is 24", and bulky items such as winter coats may need up to 28". Any closet with a depth less than 22" is not deep enough for hanging clothes. Consider rebuilding them with greater depth.

The 11" on either side of the door is sufficient room for shoes, bags, belts, scarves and ties. Just add shelves and specialty hangers as needed.

I think because of the shallowness of the closets, you will need to put the hanging rods across the ends and use the center of the back wall for hooks. Measure the length of your shirts/jackets, put one rod as high as you can, leaving room to manipulate the hangers on and off the rod, then put another rod about 2 inches below where the bottom of your shirts/jackets will reach. I'm guessing that the bottom rod will be about 42" below the top rod.

Use one end of the closet for the double rod and one end for a single rod if you have lots of long hanging items like dresses.

If you have hanging rods at each end, your garments will take up about 24" on each end, leaving only about 4 inches in the center for hooks. I think the rods will have to hang from the ceiling because they need to be installed 12" from the wall which is into the doorway so you can't put the rod from wall to wall.

Those are pretty poorly designed closets, unfortunately.

The shallowness will be challenging -- standard depth shelving is around 14", and hangers are even deeper, so you end up with not much space to pull things out from the sides.

Anyway, if we pretend that's not the case, it's easy to make the most of the space with something like this:

This is the default suggestion of EasyClosets -- allows shoe or sweater storage on the shelves, as well as whatever you want to put on top, and maximizes hanger space. If you have dressers for most of your clothes, and/or not many shoes, you could dry to go all rods, maybe with some long, but you'll want a divider for strength anyway.

I think I would be tempted to reframe the door for 48" bifold doors. Then you can actually use something like acm posted.
