I suggest a walnut finish like the picture below. It would give a richness to the facade. But, if he wants red this is a nice shade of red.

I agree a dark walnut finish would look nice, you can add some brick red potting planters in the front for color pops.

terryjp - I love blue doors, but he thinks a door should be red. Keitha I like those two shades - brown or a slightly brown red.

Sweetlake - I like the idea of adding some potted color as well.

An update: We went with a dark red, and in the process learned a few things. First, even if the paint claims to contain primer, the substrate still needs to be primed. Second, don't paint when temps are nearing 90 degrees F. Third, a red door may require more than two coats.

The true color is pictured in the porch shot. The close up photo makes it look more pink. The close up also reveals what mistakes we made. Drips, from overloading the brush to counteract the extremely fast drying time, which caused streaks, and all caused by the heat and two inexperienced painters. Still, with a little work, the door will soon be fabulous!

So the painting is done and it turned out well. Here is the door, using a roller really helped (and not being in direct sunlight).

The potted plants will be there next week, and I will post a photo of that as well.
