Start with the new bed if you must but I would just paint that one white and save the money. Next comes bedding from that you choose wall color and add the other items that go with the bed . Night tables lamps the dresser.Some nice billowing drapes in a white linen very full.This is one of hundreds on google to give you inspiration

I'm thinking I would just replace the dresser with a longer/wider dresser. The dresser I currently have has a couple of very deep drawers - I'd rather have more smaller drawers. I looked at beds last night and am leaning towards an upholstered bed. I'm somewhat flexible on budget - I want to get pieces that will really work and am willing to stretch if necessary. I like the bench idea!

It seems as though you definitely are leaning toward upholstered. It's just a matter of finding one that works for you.
